ORGANIZATIONAL OVERVIEW:
Founded in January 2000, Arts for Learning (A4L) is a nonprofit organization dedicated to
advancing teaching and learning through the arts and community cultural resources. A4L is a
joint initiative of the Miami-Dade County Department of Cultural Affairs, Miami-Dade County
Public Schools, and Young Audiences, Inc., a national nonprofit leader in arts-in-education.
Arts for Learning believes in the power of the arts to enrich and change lives -connecting
teachers, parents, artists and the community to reach children. As one of Miami's leading
sources of arts integration services, A4L provides quality arts-based programs that link the arts
to other core-curriculum subjects to support academic achievement, build life skills and support
child development.
PROPOSED SERVICES:
School Programs (Early GET smART, GET smARTJ
For the 2008-2009 school year, A4L proposes to offer its Early GET smART program to 11
pre-school classrooms and its hallmark GET smART program to two teacher teams
The Early GET smART (pre-K) program is designed for children ages two to five. The program
uses children's literature as a spring board for the development of arts-integrated lesson plans
and activities. All participating classrooms receive a 6-hour Early GET smART professional
development workshop; 10 visits from an A4L teaching artist, and 2 coaching sessions with A4L
staff. A4L will also provide a Books & Books Book Bundle for each classroom's resource center.
Early Get smART empowers teachers and parents to use the visual and performing arts
experiences to build literacy skills for young children. Participating schools are listed below.

The Get smART (grades K-12) program is centered on teacher professional development.
Professional development sessions emphasize planning, teamwork and evaluation. Through
ongoing coaching and professional development, classroom teachers, art specialists, and A4L
teaching artists work to develop best practices in arts integration. In the 2008/2009 academic
year, A4L will offer the GET smART program to two teams of teachers at Fienberg/Fisher K-8
Center. A team is comprised of 5-7 teachers.
As part of the refinement process to welcome new teachers and continue to challenge veteran
GET smART teachers, A4L teams will be assigned to a Level 1, 2, or 3 group. Level 1 teams
receive extensive coaching from A4L staff. As teams progress through each level, they receive
more in-classroom arts experiences. Teachers that participate in the program for three or more
years and demonstrate expertise as well as interest in arts integration will be invited to become
teacher leaders. Teacher leaders offer ongoing support to new GET smART teachers and
contribute to A4L's GET smART program design.
This year, there will be one Level 2 team and one Level 3 team at Fienberg/Fisher K-8 Center.
One team will base its unit on DaVinci and the other on Everglades Past and Present. There
are 14 GET smART teachers participating in the 2008/2009 program. The following is a table

Community Programs (After-School)
A4L will offer 10 year-long residencies. Each residency is considered an after-school
course. This includes two courses at Flamingo Park, four courses at Scott Rakow, and
four courses at Biscayne Elementary.
To reach students beyond the school day, A4L will partner with three after-school sites to
provide visual and performing arts instruction that emphasizes life skill development and
academic achievement. For this component, professional visual and performing artists, writers,
choreographers, and directors work with students to explore selected themes, ideas and
concepts through their art making.
During the 2008-2009 school year, A4L proposes to offer the City of Miami Beach high quality
sequential arts instruction to children eight to twelve years of age enrolled in the after care
programs at Biscayne Elementary, Flamingo Park, and the Scott Rakow Center. For these
after-school programs, A4L's teaching artists will implement year long residencies.

National research demonstrates a strong positive correlation between children who are engaged
in 3+ hours of arts instruction and their academic and social success. Combined with their
Miami-Dade County Public school program, children enrolled in this program may receive more
than five hours of arts instruction on a weekly basis.
Performances (School (Pre-K-12) and Community Settings (After-school/Summer)]
In addition to in-depth classroom experiences from visual and performing artists, A4L
will provide seven performances at various site locations. Performances will be tailored
to reach age groups and complement settings.
Arts for Learning will provide seven performances to students at participating Miami Beach
sites. Performances will take place throughout the year. A4L will select performances based
on site requests and settings. For example, summer performances at Flamingo will emphasize
outdoor, interactive components, while early childhood performances will focus on literacy. A
summary of outreach is listed below.
