SUBJECT: WEEKLY UPDATE
The purpose of this LTC is to advise you that in an effort to keep you and your staff's better informed
about initiatives that the City Manager's Office is working on, I plan to send weekly updates every
Friday afternoon describing some of the areas the Administration focused on during the week.
The updates for the week of Monday, May 28 - Friday, June 1,2001 are as follows:
Memorial Day weekend events - As you all know, many factors contributed to the events of the
holiday weekend. The Administration worked throughout the weekend to address these issues.
Although things were back to normal by Tuesday, May 29, we continued to work throughout the day
to deal with the after effects. A press conference was convened to ensure that accurate facts were
shared with the media. In addition, we met with representatives from area hotels, the Greater Miami
Convention and Visitors Bureau (GMCVB), the Greater Miami and Beaches Hotel Association,
nightclub and restaurant owners, and area merchants to assess the weekend's impacts and to continue
to enhance plans for the future. We expect to compile the information and suggestions we gather
to develop some long term strategies that will address the needs of residents, visitors, and merchants.
Budget review - Representatives from OMB and the City Manager's Office continued to meet with
representatives from Departments to review budget requests for FY 2002. We plan to meet with all
Departments by the end of next week.
Microsoft Global Briefing Convention - City Departments continue to prepare for the Microsoft
Convention from July 7 - 17,2001 including clean-up and landscaping efforts throughout the City.
The two week event win utilize the entire Convention Center and Gleason Theater and is expected
to generate $19.1 million city-wide.
Bid for Parks - Bids for Crespi, Fairway, Stillwater, Tatum, La Gorce, Fisher, Muss, Island View and
Washington Parks were issued this week. We anticipate awarding contracts by end of July 2001.
.
Miami-Dade Regional Library - The site acquisition has been resolved and the Administration will
proceed with the bidding for the construction of the regional library .
Byron Carlyle "Arts in North Beach" Committee Meeting - The Administration provided an update
on the stabilization of the Byron Carlyle and use of approved funds for the improvement of the
building. Also discussed the potential use of the building as an interim performing arts space while
the Colony Theater is under construction.
RDA Budget Presentation Tax Increment Finance Committee - Administration reviewed current
projects and discussed the 2001-2002 budget, which was approved due to low administrative
expenses.
Department Management Team Meeting - was held to discuss, among other things, the recent
modifications in the City Manager's Office. A separate LTC with more detail has been sent to you
regarding this issue.
Greater Miami Chamber of Commerce Goals Conference 2001 - Various representatives from City
Departments and Divisions have been invited to participate in this weekend conference from June
15 - 17,2001 to help the Chamber set their goals and objectives for the coming year. We would be
happy to provide additional information about these weekend sessions if you are interested in
participating.
City Hall Fire Alarm System - A reminder that there will be a "[mal" test of the City Hall fire alarm
system beginning at 8:00 p.m. Friday, June 1 and then again at 8:00 a.m. Saturday, June 2.
"Soul Beach" June 1 - 3 Weekend - "Soul Beach", a first time event utilizing Miami Beach hotels
in the 17th - 21 st Street area, has been hosting several events in the Miami-Dade County area,
including Miami Beach, Although we do not anticipate any of the challenges we experienced last
weekend, emergency points of contact have been identified and communicated to appropriate staff.
