LTC 328-2008 63rd Street Bridge1~,±=r;~~ lV~.~ ,- : _ 2DOB DEC 19 °r' b: 23 .~ - OFFICE OF THE CITY MANAGER No. LTC # 3zs-zoos LETTER TO COMMISSION TO Mayor Matti H. Bower and Members of the City Commission FROM: Jorge M. Gonzalez, City Manager _ DATE: December 19, 2008 » SUBJECT: 63r0 Street Bridge ~I The purpose of this Letter to Commission (LTC) is to inform you that on January 5, 2009 through January 24, 2009, the Florida Department of Transportation (FDOT) will work on the 63`° Street Bridge to close the gap between the northern and southern bridge leaves. This work is being done as a result of a request from the City's Bikeways Committee. The gap needs to be corrected because it creates a safety hazard for bicyclists traveling eastbound over the bridge, since bicycle tires can get caught in the gap. This work will begin on Monday, January 5, 2009 through Saturday, January 24, 2009 during the evening hours only from 9pm to Gam, so as to minimize impacts to traffic. All six lanes of vehicular traffic will be shut down during this work, and a scheduled detour route will be provided. Although the Contractor will be working on all lanes of the bridge, they will ensure that they are able to open one lane of traffic for emergency vehicles and public safety vehicles only. The Maintenance of Traffic (MOT) plan, which takes into account the scheduled detours, includes the utilization of electronic message boards that notify the public about the detour before and while the work is conducted (see Attachment 1, Detour Map). The electronic message boards will be installed one week in advance of the work at the locations listed below. Police officers will be assisting the Contractor with the execution of the MOT plan each night. Electronic Message Board Locations: • Indian Creek Drive, adjacent to Brittany Park and south of the parking area • Julia Tuttle Causeway, east-bound before the off-ramp • Alton Road, northbound before 63'" Street • Pine Tree Drive, northbound before 41" Street City staff will be closely coordinating all activities with FDOT and their Contractor during this work. The City will also initiate a public outreach program in order to notify residents of the MOT plan, which will consist of the following: • Distribution of Public Advisory to local media • Public Advisory to be posted on the City's website • Notification to the impacted Homeowners Associations Please feel free to contact me if you have any questions or concerns.
