Please be as specific as possible; name of event, specific dates, venues, times, artists, etc. Use extra page if necessary. Project description as approved by Grants Panel: Arts Inside The Open Tent is a new initiative presenting innovative work rooted in Jewish tradition, practice, culture and/or text in the context of Miami-Dade's vibrant cultural vista. Programs will feature contemporary art and artists working in various disciplines -performing, visual, literary, and media arts. This project will showcase emerging work centering on Jewish themes by promoting new Jewish culture, the way-beyond-Fiddler-On-The-Roof voices of contemporary Jewish artists to a broad audience in order to celebrate Jewish culture and community as well as deepen understanding about Judaism to Jews and non-Jews alike. In August of 2007, the very first program was produced, the performance art/puppetry piece Tiny Ninja Talmud Theater at the Moore Building in the Design District in order to attract a broad arts crowd. The Spring 2008 Arts Inside The Open Tent programming includes three shows distinctly presented outside of Jewish institutions, in the context of Miami-Dade's general cultural programmming in order to showcase this work to the broadest possible audience. Two shows were programmed for alternative spaces including The Esther Show which drew a full house of over 80 people in The Pawn Shop's Boutique Lounge; and Nice Jewish Girls Gone Bad is scheduled for the end of May in the DuPont Building where the historical building's ornate lobby will be tranformed into a cabaret. Miami Beach programming in the current year is the presentation of Golem, a world music-influenced Klezmer-rock-fusion band, on Thursday, April 10 at the North Beach Bandshell. Admission for all Arts Inside The Open Tent programs, handled through Brown Paper Tickets, alow- fee box office service company offerining online and phone purchasing, is $18. Because South Florida offers a broad audience base, with a significant and diverse Jewish population, a strong and loyal arts audience as well as built-in opportunities for cultural tourism, all of these populations are target audience for the Golem performance. Marketing materials have included a season brochure and an electronic flyer. With an expanded season in 2008-2009, The Open Tent will have more activity in Miami Beach. The only already scheduled program for 2008-09 is an exhibition of the work of graphic novelist, JT Waldman, featuring work from his Megillat Esther, the Story of Esther, planned for March 2008 in conjunction with Purim at Art Center/South Florida. This show intends to reach a broad general visual arts audience to showcase cutting edge interpretations of Jewish text and culture. We are currently considering and researching 9 other projects/artists for the 2008-2009 Season, including: 1. A music event with in partnership with Heeb Magazine and a music industry partner in August, possibly at a Miami Beach venue or nightclub. 2. A week-long musician residency co-produced with a major cultural institution featuring performances and activities engaging the community in workshops, social engagement, and 6of11 performance. Activities for this project will happen in Miami and Miami Beach, venues are still under consideration and negotiation. 3. A multidisciplinary event with a media partner and a music industry partner as part of Sleepless Night. 4. A month-long multidisciplinary site-specific installation environmental project in partnership with environmental and arts organizations, local and guest artists, rooted in Jewish environmental values and coinciding with Tu B'Shvat, "Jewish Earth Day" in February 2009 with site throughout Miami Beach and Greater Miami. 5. Aspoken-word/beatbox performer addressing Israeli/Palestinian relations with a co-producing arts organization. Venue is to be determined. 6. A performance artist addressing questions about gender, race and Jewish culture. Venue is to be determined. Project description as revised (if applicable) based upon the City Commission approved award: Changes to projects awarded under the Artistic Disciplines program must still adhere to the requirement that the work is new or has never before been presented in Miami Beach. The Open Tent and The City of Miami Beach Arts in The Parks present Frank London's Magic City Music Mayhem Flamingo Park November 2, 3pm Recognized as a central figure in the neo-Klezmer revival, Frank London of The Klezmer Conservatory Band, The Klezmatics, and Frank London's Klezmer Brass All-Stars brings his band to Miami for an afternoon of showcasing great contemporary Klezmer fused on stage with the sounds of special guest musicians from Miami's dizzying array of culturally-rich music scenes. Heeb Storytelling in partnership with Heeb Magazine, Florida Center for the Literary Arts, and the Miami Book Fair International at Write Out Loud at Miami Book Fair International On Fair Grounds, Second Avenue between 4th and 5th Streets November 14, 2008, 7pm As engaging as a comedy show and as compelling as short stories, the 7 minute presentations of seven local favorite performers, comedians, writers, artists and musicians tell a story on stage. Capturing the wide spectrum of modern day "Jewish-Hess," they challenge perceptions and widen the parameters of what constitutes a "Jewish story." Heeb Storytelling has been presented around the globe to hungry and appreciative crowds in such places as Washington, DC, Boston, San Francisco, Los Angeles, Kansas City, Atlanta, Chicago, St. Louis, Vancouver and Jerusalem. Stories told at past shows have run the gamut: from experiencing darkness and debauchery on a lonely Christmas Eve to kissing former child star Ricky Schroeder at a cheesy family resort to growing up as Richard Pryor's Jewish daughter. However outrageous, they provide a glimpse into what it means to be Jewish in the 21st century. February, 2009 -Program TBA The committee of Arts Inside The Open Tent recently made a last minute decision to cancel what was 7of11 planned for February and seek a different project. Ideas are still in discussion for this time slot. March 20 -April 24, 2009 JT Waldman (in partnership with Art Center/South Florida An exhibition of the work of graphic novelist, JT Waldman, featuring work from his Megillat Esther, the Story of Esther as well as other Jewish content works including a piece on the Four Children commissioned by Nextbook. This show intends to reach a broad general visual arts audience to showcase cutting edge interpretations of Jewish text and culture. Associated programs will be an opening event featuring the artist presenting a talk titled The Whole Entire History of the Jews Through Comic Books as well as a creative seder tying in Waldman's 4 Children work and engaging locally- based artists in all media (performing and visual) to participate with their own interpretations of parts of the Haggadah to be presented as an experiential installation during Second Saturday in either the Design District or Wynwood. 8of11 Exhibit 2-A: jProject Budget /Revised Total Project Budget Name of organization: Temple Beth Sholom Date(s) of Project: Octobers 1, 2008 -September 30, 2009 Attach a copy of the total Project budget or list cash expenses and cash revenues specifically identified with y ur program, project or events.
