LETTER TO COMMISSION
July 3, 2001
TO: Mayor Neisen O, Kasdin and
Members of the City Commission
FROM: Jorge M. Gonzalez 1 ~
City Manager
SUBJECT: LOCAL LAW ENFORCEMENT BLOCK GRANT FUNDS
This Letter to the Commission is to provide further detail regarding the Local Law Enforcement
Grant funding program.
The grant will become effective on October 1,2001. The grant funds may be spent over the next two
years ending September 30, 2003. The total grant funding is $426,147, with the United States
Department of Justice providing $383,532 and the City providing $42,615 in matching funds. As we
have still not finalized the Police Department's budget for the upcoming fiscal year, we are
estimating the expenses as detailed below.
Approximateiy $150,000 will be used to purchase additional laptop computers for use by patrol
officers to reduce the amount of time they spend writing police reports. The remaining grant funds,
estimated at $276,147, will be earmarked for overtime for quality of life issues as they arise during
the year such as the Homeless Initiative, Traffic Enforcement problems, and Anti-Drug Initiatives.
Please contact me should you have any further questions or concerns.
