SUBJECT: 21" Street Teen Club Grand Opening
You are cordially invited to attend the Grand Opening of the Miami Beach Teen Club located at
21~` Street Recreation Center. This long awaited event will take place on Friday, February 27,
2009 from 4:00 p.m. - 6:00 p.m. at 2100 Washington Avenue directly across the street from
Miami Beach Senior High. The ribbon cutting ceremony will begin promptly at 4:30 p.m.
The renovations of the new Teen Center include a media centerwith audio and video capabilfty,
a computer lab with 15 computers, amovie/video game room, a teaming center with smart
board tutoring, a small fitness center, a game room featuring pool tables, air hockey, ping pong,
arcade games and more.
New activities include SAT, FCAT and other educational tutoring, professional instruction in
nutrition, drug prevention, video and audio engineering, dance and Irfe skills, The program gives
at risk teens the opportunity to be a part of a FREE program that teaches the social skills
necessary to overcome behavioral issues and other barriers. Expanding this program citywide
has given teens in low income areas new opportunities for educational and personal growth.
This program is partially funded by the Office of Juvenile Justice. The initial grant was allocated
two years ago when the Cdy received $50,000 as a start-up. Due to the success of the
program, the second allocation was granted for $648,403.
The Teen Club, which was established in 2004 with only nine teens at the North Shore Park
Youth Center, now boasts more than 120 members. The recently approved funding will be
utilized to maintain the current program at North Shore Park while expanding the program,
using the same format, to the south end of the city including transportation for teens from
Nautilus Middle School.
