ANALYSIS The Miami Beach Fire Rescue, Mount Sinai Medical Center, Medtronic Physio-Control, and the American Heart Association have been working to establish Miami Beach as a designated "Heart Safe Community". The goal of the project is to train people to recognize heart attacks, strokes and sudden cardiac arrest, how to administer CPR and how to operate Automatic External Defibrillators. Defibrillation within three minutes is considered to be the best way to save a person in cardiac arrest. A major part of this initiative is to place Automatic External Defibrillators or (AED's), within three minutes of anyplace in the city. The five AED's donated here are the first of an estimated 375 needed for city entities. Four will be issued to the Police Department and one will be placed in City Hall. The AED's are valued at approximately $19,500. There will be appropriate training provided by the Fire Department. The City Commission should adopt this Resolution. JMG/EJ/ed FJ.
