Police investigations at the time lowed that New York gambler yank Erickson and organized ~ime figures Anthony Carfano and ihn Angersola did hold interests in ~e hotel and Mrs. Wofford finally gained control in 1950. She was a member of the La- Gorce Country Club, the Surf B Club and the Church-By-The-Sea. She was born in Cassopolis, Mich., and had resided here for the past 50 years. Mrs. Wofford is survived by her niece, Jill Henderson, of Miami, and an uncle, Lo Lewis Simpson of, Cas- sopolis. Wofford -Hotel To Be Rename d Seeking. to rid the Wofford ~ o- }c)•~rs# the stigma a tached the name because of its long con- trol by racketeers, Mrs. Olive Wofford will call the hotel the Wofford Beach hotel when it re- ~,~°~ opens Nov. 1 after extensive al- l~ terations. ~~° Mrs. Wofford fought in the ~... ,) courts to seize the hotel from the unsavory characters who had taken control and had made 1, , , the hotel a hoodlum hangout, but ~, was unsuccessful in her at- tempts to break a 10-year lease executed in 1940. Testimony about the Wofford, which is at Collins ave. and 24th st., figured in the Kefauver hear- ings in Miami. At one time Frank Erickson, convicted New York bookie, had a "piece" of the lease. EricksmrHad Wofford Share, a Papers Reveal ~- BY .DON PETIT S Miami Daily News Staif Write! s Gambler Frank Erickson held e an interest in the mob-controlled n Wofford hotel at Miami Beach It t on~Pr~eYSi~den tAbeoAllenUerg, lit was revealed today in papers _ which were ize from , son. i Records s~ze` yin the game" bler's New York headquarters revealed that Allenberg reported regularly to Erickson about Erickson's end of a partnership in the Wofford. i The Erickson-Allenberg tieup in the Wofford operation was re- • vealed today in the inventory of records seized May 2 by the New York district attorney's office. Assistant New York District Attorney Vincent A. G. O'Connor said here today that some of thei items in the inventory which had been released earlier in New York showed Exickson's partner- ship in the Colonial inn and other enterprises. The records today revealed that Allenberg not only reported to Erickson on the operation of the Wofford but supplied Erick- son with copies of his own fed- eral income tax returns for the years 1936 through 1943 as well. The inventory shows that Erickson held an interest in the hotel in the same years that Lit- tle Augie Pisano and John Angersola, alias John King, no- torious mobsters, moved in on the place. Pisano is a big-time racket boss in Brooklyn, N.Y., and Angersola is a member of the Cleveland mob. A letter was found in the files addressed to Erickson from Al- lenberg reporting on the finan- cial condition of the hotel for 1943. A second Lett r is listed in the inventory from M. G. Furman, a certified public accountant at Miami Beach. ' The letter read: "As you prob. ably know the fiscal year of the partnership which operates the hotel is Oct. 31.
