LTC# 122-2009 LETTER TO COMMISSION TO: Mayor Matti Herrera Bower and Members of the City Commission FROM: Jorge M. Gonzalez, City Manager DATE: May 5, 2009 SUBJECT: Storm Prep Expo 2009 The purpose of this LTC is to announce that the City of Miami Beach. along with Miami Dade County and the American Red Cross of Greater Miami and the Keys, are partnering again to host the Storm Prep Expo 2009 at the Miami Beach Convention Center, Hall D on Saturday. May 30 and Sunday, May 31, 2009 from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Storm Prep Expo is snot-for-profit event aimed at raising hurricane preparedness awareness among Miami Dade County residents and businesses. In 2008: the event attracted approximately 5000 people. This year it is anticipated that the number of attendees will reach 20,000. Exhibitors include municipalities throughout Miami Dade County and private businesses geared towards hurricane information, preparedness and supplies. Special guests for Storm Prep Expo 2009 include pro basketball star Alonzo Mourning; Max Mayfield, former Director, National Hurricane Center/Hurricane Specialist, WPLG ABC Channel 10; David Bernard, Chief Meteorologist, WFOR CBS Channel 4; and many others. City of Miami Beach Mayor Matti Herrera Bower will welcome attendees at the Opening Ceremony; on Saturday, May 30, 10:30 a.m. City of Miami Beach Community Outreach Team member Lynn W. Bernstein has served on the organizing committee for the event. The Outreach Team will coordinate the participation of the CMB departments including Code, Building, Parking, Parks, Police, Fire, Public Works Sanitation Division, Planning, Housing and Community Development. Each departmentwill develop and distribute information and materials relevant to hurricane preparation for our residents and businesses. including what to do before, during and after a storm. As in the past. a Hurricane Guide will be printed in both English and Spanish with important information for the Miami Beach community. The Miami Beach Fire Department will offer free blood pressure screening and will bring a fire truck to the event, and the Miami Beach Police Department K-9 Unit will offer a demonstration on Sunday, May 31. The Honor Guard will be part of the Opening Ceremonies on May 30. PD will also exhibit emergency equipment and include Marine Preparedness as part of their display and information.
