FROM: Jorge M. Gonzalez, City Manager
DATE: May 26, 2009
SUBJECT: FDOT Roadway Enhancement Project -Collins Avenue, 15tH Street to North of Lincoln
Road
The purpose of this Letter to the Commission (LTC) is to provide you with information on the Florida
Department of Transportation (FDOT) Roadway Enhancement Project on Collins Avenue from 15tH
Street to north of Lincoln Road. The project work plan consists of upgrading pedestrian signs and
signals, repaving and re-striping the roadway, reconstructing sidewalks and driveways at various
locations, and American Disability Act (ADA) compliant curb ramps (see Attachment 1, FDOT
Project Fact Sheet). The estimated cost of the project is $370,000.
The construction work is scheduled to begin on May 27, 2009 and will be completed by September
24, 2009. Please note that bad weather or other unforeseen circumstances could impact this
schedule. Intermittent north and southbound lane closures along Collins Avenue will occur
during non-event days and weekends, Sunday through Saturday, during daytime hours (9:00
a.m. to 3:30 p.m.).
Please be advised that during these improvements, at least one lane will remain open and access to
local residences, businesses and bus stops will be maintained at all times. These improvements will
also require the restriction of on-street parking at various times and locations. Pedestrian access
will be maintained on one side of the road at all times.
FDOT is coordinating closely with the City as well as with local businesses and residences. FDOT,
with the City's Community Resource Coordinator, has met individually with each business owner or
manager to inform them of the project. FDOT has mailed the Project Fact Sheet to each impacted
business owner along Collins Avenue, and has also agreed to notify each business before starting
work in their respective areas.
If you have any questions or concerns, please contact FDOT Project Administrator Melissa
Mojarena De Zayas at 305-962-3527, or Public Information Specialist Monica Diaz at 305-499-2410
or via email at Monica.Diaz@dot.state.fl.us.
