The purpose of this correspondence is to provide you with an update of the Administration's
actions to restore the Flamingo Park tennis courts thatwere damaged as a result of the June
5, 2009, rain event.
Following the storm it was determined that all seventeen courts were seriously damaged and
the implementation of standard repair/maintenance procedures of restoring) maintaining clay
courts after a normal summer rain was not possible. The damage was so extensive that not
one of the 17 courts was deemed playable in the condition it was found after the courts dried
enough to be assessed.
Since the rain storm we have been working continuously with a number of professional,
reputable tennis court construction companies to obtain their assessment of damage and
recommendations/quotes for the courts restoration. We promptly evaluated each
proposal to determine the best, most cost effective solution. Each solution requires several
steps of repair that, when completed: will return the courts to a safe/playable condition. It
was also necessary for us to check references on the companies that submitted repair
estimates. On Friday, June 19, 2009, we issued the required purchase order to Fast-Dry
Courts to do the restoration work. Earlier this week we finalized the details with Fast-Dry
and established a start date of this Thursday, June 25, 2009, weather permitting. According
to the contractor, he anticipates it will take two days or less to do each of the seventeen
courts, and he will make every effort to have them completed sooner if possible. Although
we can not state exactly when the courts will be reopened, we are optimistic that the work
will begin promptly and as banks of courts are repaired. they will be made available for play.
We clearly understand the importance of the tennis center to our community. As should be
expected. staff engaged in an analysis to ensure we understood the extent of the damage,
analyzed several options, as well as considered the timing involved in these repairs, which
would be made on the eve of the demolition of the courts for the long-needed permanent
improvements to our tennis facilities. We have proceeded as expeditiously as possible to
obtain the best, as well as most cost effective, solution to restore the courts for immediate
use.
