RE: Miami Beach Resolution No. 2009-27061
Dear Mr. Parcher:
This letter is in response to your correspondence regarding the Miami Beach Resolution No. 2009-27061.
Miami-Dade County Public Schools appreciates the resolution passed by the City of Miami Beach to
support the District's adoption of `Green Cleaning" initiatives. The District is working with the Florida School
Plant Management Association (FSPMA) to increase utilization of green cleaning supplies in our schools.
We will open our first Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) School in August of 2009
with a green cleaning program. In-house laboratory tests of several manufacturers' green cleaning floor
care finish products have been completed; a field test will be implemented during the 2009-10 school year.
Preliminary evaluation of hand soap and paper products provided positive results; however, cost
effectiveness remains an issue that requires close scrutiny, considering the District's current budget
constraints. Preparations are underway by our Procurement and Plant Operations departments to submit
bids for eco-friendly hydrogen peroxide cleaning products.
During the summer, staff will be providing awareness training to custodial personnel with emphasis placed
on product effectiveness and environmental and health benefits of green cleaning. The District will continue
to increase utilization of green cleaning products wherever economically feasible.
Thank you again for the actions taken by the City of Miami Bach to support Miami-Dade County Public
Schools' green cleaning initiatives. You may contact Mr. James J. Dillard, District Inspections Officer,
District Inspections. Operations and Emergency Management, at 305-995-1550 for additional information
about the District's green cleaning initiatives.
Sincerely
N
- CJ
