SUBJECT, FDOT Construction Projects in Miami Beach
The purpose of this Letter to Commission (LTC) is to provide you with an update on the Florida Department of
Transportation's (FDOT) construction projects in Miami Beach. The southbound Interstate 95 (I-95} ramp onto
the Julia Tuttle Causeway eastbound, as part of the FDOT I-95 Express Project, reopened on Wednesday:
July 22, 2009, as planned. The milling and resurfacing of the Julia Tuttle Causeway is ahead of schedule and
was completed on Friday, July 24, 2009. FDOT had originally delayed the MacArthur Causeway Terminal
Island Milling and Resurfacing Project until August 2009 so that both projects would not overlap. FDOT has
now advanced the start date of the MacArthur Causeway project to last Sunday, July 26, 2009 and estimates
that it will be completed within five (5) months. Please see the attached MacArthur Causeway project fact
sheet for more information (Attachment 1, MacArthur Causeway Fact Sheet).
The MacArthur CausewayTerminal Island Milling and Resurfacing Project will occurduring iwo events in the
Miami area in September; the Publix Triathlon on Saturday, September 12, 2009 from 7:00 AM -10:00 AM
and the Escape to Miami Triathlon on Sunday, September 27, 2009 from 7:30 AM -10:00 AM. FDOT has
confirmed that no project activities are scheduled for either event and that their Project Engineer will ensure
that the contractor cleans up the area for the events. City staff will continue to coordinate with the Special
Events Office and FDOT to ensure minimial impact to any other major events in Miami Beach. City staff will
also coordinate with the City's Public Relations Specialist to ensure the public is kept thoroughly informed.

From Watson Island to Terminal Island
Project Overview
On Sunday, luly 2G, 2009, the Florida Department of Transportation (FDOT), District Six, will begin a
Roadway Enhancement Project along tlse MacArthur Causeway 1 State Roacl (S.R.) AtA from Watson
Island to Terminal Island.
This project includes:
Repaving and re-striping the roadway;
Reconstructing sidewalks and upgrading curb ramps at Fountain Street (Palm Island) and Bridge
Road (Star Island) to meet Americans with Disabilities Act Standards (ADA);
• Replaying curb and gutter at several locations; and
Installing new traffic signals at the entrance to Terminal Island.
Work will last approximately five months and cost an estimated 52.2 million. Please note that bad
weather or other unforeseen circumstances could impact this schedule.
Traffic Flow
It will be necessary to close travel lanes in order to perform this work safely. Lane closures shall occur
during non-event days, nights and weekends as follows:
9:00 a.m. to 3:3o p.m., Sunday through Saturday
• 9:00 p.m. to 5:30 a.m., Sunday through Thursday nights
At least one lane will remain open in both directions and access to bus stops
