DATE: September 14, 2009 - ~,, N SUBJECT: International Coastal Cleanup Day! 2009 Miami Dade Coastal Cleanup, September 19, 2009 The purpose of this LTC is to advise you that the City of Miami Beach Community Resource and Outreach Team is once again assisting with the City's participation in the 24m Annual International Coastal Cleanup Day/2009 Miami Dade Coastal Cleanup. Worldwide, thousands of volunteers will spend their morning collecting millions of pounds of litter and debris on inland roadsides, along coastal areas, inland lakes and rivers. Volunteers will assist in this effort to clean and protect the environment. Following the cleanup, volunteers are invited to the VolunteerAppreciation Party to be held at the Miami Seaquarium. In 1988, the Florida Coastal Cleanup was created. It remains a part of the International Coastal Cleanup. a program developed by the Ocean Conservancy. The mission of the Ocean Conservancy is to educate the public on issues of maritime pollution and to use the information collected from the Cleanup to change policy. Volunteers will assist in this effort to clean and protect the environment by eliminating debris that injures wildlife, contaminates beaches and waterways and threatens boater safety in Miami Dade County. Volunteer projects will be held on Saturday, September 19, 2009 from 9:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m. There will be six projects in Miami Beach coordinated with partner organizations. They are as follows: • North Shore Open Space Park - 79"' to 86'" Streets -Carnival Cruise Lines • Tatum Waterway -Dickens Avenue and 75`" Street -Teen Job Corps • Beach -Government Cut to 7'F Street - US Coastguard Auxiliary • Beach - 22"d to 46'~ Streets -Miami Dade County Bar Association • Beach - 52nd Street - 62n° Street -Robert Allen Law • Monument Island - ECOMB All participants will volunteer through the Environmental Coalition of Miami Beach (ECOMB). It is anticipated that there will be approximately 700 volunteers participating in the various projects.
