DATE: October 16, 2009
SUBJECT: Invitation to the 10th Street Auditorium Grand Re-Opening/Ribbon Cutting
You are invited to the grand re-opening of the 10th Street Auditorium and Beach Patrol
Headquarters. The renovation of these historic facilities, built in 1953 and 1939 respectively,
is part of our Planned Progress Capital Improvements Program. Both facilities have been
restored to modern day use, while honoring their MiMo architectural style and Nautical Art
Deco theme.
A ribbon cutting and celebration has been scheduled for Saturday, October 24, 2009, from
11:00 AM until 1:00 PM. Following the ribbon cutting ceremony in the breezeway between
the two facilities, guests will be invited inside the auditorium for a viewin~ of an exhibition of
rare photos chronicling the restoration process, and the history of the 10t Street Auditorium,
Miami Design and Preservation League (MDPL) and Beach Patrol Headquarters. Guests
can also take part in free guided walking tours of Ocean Drive led by the Miami Design
Preservation League that will include the history of the two facilities. The Miami Jazz Project
will perform on the outdoor lawn area, while children can enjoy heaps of fun in a castle-like
inflatable bounce house, build creative kites to fly, and view and learn about the Ocean
Rescue's jet-ski with a rescue sled. Event sponsors include MCM Corporation and Costco
Wholesale.
The newly restored 10th Street Auditorium is a 15,000, sq. ft. state-of-the-art facility that has
been designed to again accommodate the Art Deco Welcome Center, atwo-story exhibition
hall/interpretive center, a retail gift store, a lecture hall and administrative offices. On the east
lies the newly renovated 2,000 sq. ft. Beach Patrol Headquarters, which will continue to
serve as a valuable resource for the community with the expansion of their administrative
offices, vital support facilities for ocean rescue operations, and renovated public restrooms.
A breezeway was constructed between the two buildings in order to re-establish the historic
north-south pedestrian connection within Lummus Park.
