SUBJECT: Status of Wireless Miami Beach WiFi project
You are cordially invited to the "Wire" Cutting Ceremony for the citywide WiFi Miami
Beach network. The network provides a free wireless signal that the public can use to
access the Internet. Additionally, the Police, Fire, Building and other departments will
use the network to gain access to the City's systems while they are working out and
about Miami Beach. The WiFi Miami Beach network also offers a content filtered
version of the Internet for Miami Beach children (MBKIDS) using the same application
implemented by Miami-Dade County Public Schools. To accomplish this, the City has
worked with IBM and other organizations including FDOT, FPL and Wireless Nets to
complete what is among the first free, citywide, municipal WiFi networks.
The WiFi Miami Beach network began a "soft launch" on Wednesday, October 21 for the
area north of 63rd street. The area between 63rd street and Dade Boulevard began soft
launch mode on October 22"d, and the area south of Dade Boulevard on the 23rd. From
October 21 through October 26 ,the network was available for use and over 1100 users
registered and connected to our network over 3800 times.
An official "wire" cutting ceremony will take place on October 30th at City Hall
where citizens and members of the press will gather to celebrate the official
launch of the WiFi Miami Beach network.
After the ceremony, the network will enter into a reliability period of 90 days during which
the network will be available for all users. The network must successfully perform during
the reliability period before the City will accept it. Additional tuning and relocation of
nodes may still occur during this period to enhance coverage and connectivity. The
operations and maintenance phase of the project will begin after the City accepts the
network and will continue for six years.
Please join us at City Hall on Friday, October 30, 2009, beginning at 3:00 pm, for a
"wire" cutting to celebrate the official opening of the new WiFi Miami Beach network.
