LTC 301-2009 City Receives 2009 Project Achievement Award from the Construction Management Association of America (CMAA);,: -I , m MIAMIBEACH ~~ ~ -`~ OFFICE OF THE CITY MANAGER NO. LTC# 301-2009 LETTER`70 COMMISSION TO: Mayor Matti Herrera Bower and Members of the City Commission FROM: Jorge M. Gonzalez, City Manager (___~~ DATE: November 2, 2009 SOSJECT: City Receives 2009 Project Achieve nt Award from the Construction Management Association of America (CMAA) The purpose of this Letter to Commission (LTC) is to inform you that the City of Miami Beach was awarded the 2009 Project Achievement Award Honorable Mention by the Construction Management Association of America (CMAA) for our City's Right-of-Way Program. I accepted this prestigious award on the City's behalf, along with Assistant City Manager Tim Hemstreet and Capital Improvements Project (CIP) Program Director Charles Carrer3o, at the at the CMAA 2009 National Conference & Trade Show in Orlando, FL. Since 1999, CMAA has awarded its Project Achievement Award to recognize instances in which professional Construction or Program Management has made a significant contribution to the successful completion of a challenging project or program. Competing against 141 award submittals, our City's Right-of-Way program (ROW) was selected to receive this honorable mention, in recognition for our accomplishments, despite having faced a series of challenges, including fluctuating market cycles and construction costs; direct impacts from active hurricane seasons; and the day-to-day demands of conducting public construction in both residential and highly-urbanized areas with unique requirements and restrictions. The City's program was recognized, along with the winner, The Woodrow Wilson Bridge, which was a project completed by the Federal Highway Administration, Virginia Department of Transportation, Maryland State Highway Administration and DC Department of Transportation. Attached is a copy of the awards recipients for your information and review. The City's Right-of-Way Program includes various components, such as new and upgraded water lines, new stormwater drainage systems, new street and pedestrian lighting, landscaping and traffic~alming installations and other neighborhood improvement components. These projects affect all of the City's 13 neighborhoods, and to date, nearly $200 million of these projects have been completed, including Washington Avenue Streetscape Project, Belle Isle Streetscape and Park, and the illuminated bridge on 41st Street. Founded in 1982, CMAA's mission is 'Yo promote and enhance leadership, professionalism, and excellence in managing the development and construction of projects and programs." CMAA is North America's only organization dedicated exclusively to the interests of the professional construction and program management industry. With twenty-seven regional chapters and more than 5,000 members from both the public and private sector, CMAA's member organizations include General Electric, Constellation Energy, the U.S. General Service Administration, the U.S. Postal Service and the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers. Since becoming your City Manager over nine years ago, the Capital Improvements Program has been one of our City's top priorities. I am incredibly proud of this award, as it recognizes the hard work and effort of my staff, particularly in the CIP and Public Works departments.
