NO. 307-2009 LETTER TO COMMISSION

FROM: Jorge M. Gonzalez. City Manager ~ /

DATE: November 3. 2009
SUBJECT: Miami Beach Convention Center and The Education Fund
This Letter to Commission (LTC) is to advise you of the Miami Beach Convention Center's
partnership with The Education Fund. The Education Fund is a local charitable organization
that collects school supplies for Miami-Dade County teachers. The Center is sponsored by
Ocean Bank. The Ocean Bank Center for Educational Materials is a warehouse and
distribution program that accepts donations of usable, excess inventory, remnants, leftovers,
surplus supplies and more from companies, which it then makes available free of charge to
Miami-Dade County Public Schools teachers for their classrooms. Miami-Dade County
students benefit by having the materials necessary for their lessons, and businesses benefd
through an up to 200-percent tax deduction on the goods. Teachers may shop for free twice
each year, or on more occasions if they volunteer their time at the warehouse. As a source
of free materials for public school classrooms, the Ocean Bank Center has logged nearly
15,000 educator visits since opening in 1993, reaching half a million M-DCPS students.
The Miami Beach Convention Center (MBCC) offers this service to every show organizer.
Once approved by the show organizer, MBCC staff distributes information to exhibitors, who
have the ability to donate leftover material and supplies. The exhibitors simply fill out the
attached form, tape it to the itemlbox and the items are collected for storage; after the event
finishes, the Education Fund picks up all materials. The MBCC's objective is to have as
many event organizers take advantage of this program. We will be communicating this
opportunity to the Miami Beach schools, through Leslie Rosenfeld. The attached flyer
provides you with more detailed information on the program and The Education Fund.
