OFFICE OF THE CITY MANAGER
NO. LTC#323-2009 LETTER TO COMMISSION
TO: Mayor Matti Herrera Bower and Members of the Ci;jr Commission
FROM: Jorge M. Gonzalez, City Manager
DATE: November 24; 2009 ~
SUBIECT: Meeting with County regarding Indian Creek Fire Service
As you may recall, at the October 14, 2009 Commission meeti ng: the Commission
considered an item on the agenda relating entitled "Discussion Rega rding Examining The
Financial Pros And Cons Of Providing Fire Service To Indian Creek Village." While there
was no final motion approved by the Commission. there was directio n given to staff and a
request made of the Mayor that we meet with the County to discuss th eir position relating to
the provision of fire services to Indian Creek Village. As you m ay recall, during the
discussion there were statements made that either directly or indire ctly asserted that the
County understood Indian Creek's intent to separate from the County's fire service, and that
the County would not be adverse to the City providing that service for the Village.
On Tuesday, November 17. 2009. Mayor Bower and I met with May or Carlos Alvarez, his
chief of staff Denis Morales, and County Manager George Burgess to d iscuss several issues
of mutual interest and concern. At that time we also spoke about th e recent Commission
discussion relating to Indian Creek, and requested clarification rel ating to the County's
position on Indian Creek Village. Please see the attached letter from Mayor Alvarez
memorializing their position on the matter.
Please feel free to contact me should you have any questions or require additional
information.

Honorable Hattie Herrera Bower
Mayor
City of Miarni Beach

Miami Beach. FL 33139
Dear Mayor Bower:
For many years, the various fire departments in Miami-Dade County ha ve provided excellent
service, protecting all of our residents across a wide geographic area with a broad demographic
range It is my desire and heartfelt belief that the current division of respon sibilities not change.
As we discussed during our meeting of November 97, it is my strong position that Miarni-Dade
County, the City of Miami Beach and Indian Creek Village are all best ser ved by preserving the
current structure of tire and rescue service. 1 do not believe that the C ounty or any current
municipal fire department should encroach on anyone else's jurisdiction.
I appreciate your taking the time to meet with me, and I look forward to c ontinuing the dialogue
on this critical public;safety issue.
Sincerely,
( ~ G " °~,/lam _~
