Black History Night- On Friday, February 5, 2010, over 300 children and adults gathered at North
Shore Park Youth Center in celebration and appreciation of the achievements of historic African
Americans. Afterschool members from North Shore Park and Scott Rakow Youth Center performed
a variety of dances. recited poems and sang songs. A variety of food samples were available for
tasting, along with an arts and crafts exhibit
Visual Arts Program -From February 30 to March 24''', the City of Miami Beach Parks and
Recreation Department's Scott Rakow Youth Center Afterschool members in grades 4 - 6 will
participate in an eight-week arts series program offered at the Bass Museum by The Arts for
Learning Program. All artwork will be displayed at the Botanical Gardens on April 15. 2010.
Lightning Cheerleaders - On Saturday, January 30, 2010, the City of Miami Beach Parks and
Recreation Department's Lightning Cheerleaders took 1'' place at the Florida Cheer and Dance
Association's Miami Meltdown Competition at Florida Memorial University in Miami Gardens,
Florida. The Lightning Cheerleading squad is comprised of 23 girls in 9"' grade and under. The
team will be competing at the Spirit Cheer's Sunshine Unlimited Championship at Nova
Southeastern University on March 20, 2010.
Mardi Gras Masquerade Carnival - On Friday, January 29, 2010, over 850 youth and adults
enjoyed a party at the City of Miami Beach Parks and Recreation's Mardi Gras Masquerade held at
Flamingo Park. Children and adults of all ages enjoyed carnival rides. masks, beads. music, arts &
crafts. carnival games and face painting.
Nature Walk - On Friday, January 22; 2010, the Scott Rakow Youth Center afterschool members
and the North Shore Park Youth Center Nature Club took part in a nature walk and craft project
held at the North Shore Open Space Park, put on by the Greenspace Management Division.
Members learned important facts on native plants. animal habitats and tracking techniques. They
also took a guided tour throughout the park and discovered plants, animals and insects in their
natural habitat.
Lucky Strike Lanes - On Saturday, January 9, 2010, the North Shore Margaret M. Swett's Social
Club (for developmentally disabled adults} spent a day of bowling at Lucky Strike Lanes on Lincoln
Road. Lucky Strike has opened up their hearts and business by not charging the Social Club
members for usage of their facility. Since the program's regular home at the Scott Rakow Youth
Genter closed for renovations, the 25 member Club has, on various occasions. enjoyed bowling
and all the amenities that the facility has to offer at no cost.
