NU. LTC # U44-'~UlU LETTER, TO COMMISSION
rU: Mayor Matti Herrera Bower and Members of the City Commission
FROM: Jorge M. Gonzalez, City Manager
DATE: February 12, 2010 ~
SUBJECT: MBTV-77 now airing on BECON TV
This LTC is intended to advise you that as part of Miami Beach's ongoing efforts to provide
enhanced information about the Ciry to the community, both within and outside the City, we
have entered into a partnership with BECON-TV.
BECON-TV (W BEC), part of BECON, the Broward Education Communications Network, is
owned and operated by the School Board of Broward County and is a broadcast television
station licensed by the FCC to provide non-commercial educational programming to the
South Florida community. BECON-TV programming airs throughout Broward, Miami/Dade
and Palm Beach Counties over the air on digital channel 63.1 and on cable channel 19, on
Comcast and Advanced Cable Communications. In Miami Beach, BECON-TV (WBEC) can
be found on Atlantic Broadband cable channel 83. Il is also available in Miami Beach on
DirecTV. DISH and AT&T U-Verse on channel 63.
BECON-TV has agreed to air individual stories produced by MBTV-77 (from our CityVision
program) on BECON-TV's "Celebrate South Florida" program. The pieces that BECON-TV
will air will be ones that they feel have regional appeal. The first MBTV-77 piece that will air
on "Celebrate South Florida" will be a piece about Sleepless Night 2009. This piece is
currently airing on CityVision.
This partnership will incur no expense to the City, as the video pieces provided to BECON-
TVare pieces already being produced for our CityVision show. This partnership is beneficial
to the Ciry of Miami Beach by bringing information about Miami Beach to the entire South
Florida Community. It expands MBTV-77 viewership to the lri-County area, as well as to
viewers that do not currently have cable service but have satellite dish or U-Verse service.
By the same token, this provides BECON-TV with additional professionally produced
programming for their show. The quality and professional production of our programming
appealed to BECON. This partnership was negotiated by Jeffrey Singer of the Office of
Communications, and Robert Small of BECON-TV.
As always, please feel free to contact me should you have any questions or require
additional information.
