2010-27350 ResoRESOLUTION NO., 2010-27350 A RESOLUTION OF THE MAYOR AND CITY COMMISSION OF THE CITY OF MIAMI BEACH, FLORIDA, RETROACTIVELY ACCEPTING AND APPROPRIATING CONTRIBUTIONS FROM THE SOUTH FLORIDA SUPER BOWL HOST COMMITTEE, OCEAN DRIVE ASSOCIATION AND MOTOROLA, INCORPORATED IN AN AMOUNT NOT TO EXCEED ONE HUNDRED AND EIGHT THOUSAND DOLLARS ($108,000) TOWARD THE COSTS ASSOCIATED WITH THE CLOSURE OF OCEAN DRIVE DURING SUPER BOWL XLIV. WHEREAS, South Florida once again hosted the National Football League's (NFL Super Bowl. Super Bowl XLIV took place on February 7, 2010 at Sun Life Stadium and was the 10t Super Bowl hosted in South Florida since 1969; and WHEREAS, the South Florida Super Bowl Host Committee is a private, not-for-profit 501 c(6) that serves as the liaison between the NFL and local planning efforts for the Super Bowl. Planning efforts included community outreach, special events, transportation and logistics management to name a few; and throughouHthe entire tri county arealand mu hrlof that activsty took p acehon Miami Beacheandowl WHEREAS, similar to 2007, the City partnered with the Host Committee, Motorola Inc., and the Ocean Drive Association to close Ocean Drive to vehicular traffic from Thursday, February 4, through Sunday, February 7, 2010; and WHEREAS, the cost of the closure was funded by the aforementioned entities which totaled $108,000 and included Police, Fire, Sanitation and Parking services. NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT DULY RESOLVED BY THE MAYOR AND CITY COMMISSION OF THE CITY OF MIAMI BEACH, FLORIDA, that the Mayor and City Commission of the City of Miami Beach, Florida, hereby retroactively accept and appropriate contributions from the South Florida Super Bowl Host Committee, Ocean Drive Association and Motorola, Incorporated in an amount not to exceed one hundred and eight thousand dollars ($108,000) toward the costs associated with the closure of Ocean Drive during Super Bowl XLIV. Super Bowl XLIV brought thousands of visitors to our community and generated more than $350 million in total economic impact for the region. Most of these dollars were generated from the 125,000 visitors who patronized hotels, restaurants, stores and attractions, and indirectly from media exposure that leads to increased tourism and business relocation. Numerous public and private events occurred the week of Super Bowl throughout the entire tri-county area. As you can imagine, much of that activity took place on Miami Beach, specifically South Beach, which began in late January for the Pro Bowl. The first major event was the Media Party on Tuesday, January 30, 2007. There were also several television productions taking place in the City including ESPN, CBS and the NFL Network. RECOMMENDATION Adopt the Resolution ANALYSIS As you know, South Florida once again hosted the National Football League's (NFL) Super Bowl. Super Bowl XLIV took place on February 7, 2010 at Sun Life Stadium and was the 10tH Super Bowl hosted in South Florida since 1969. An added element that was also coordinated was the ING Miami Marathon, as well as Boat Show and. Yacht and Brokerage Show, certain portions of which occurred during the same time period. Super Bowl XLIV brought thousands of visitors to our community and generated what is estimated at more than $350 million in total economic impact for the region. Most of these dollars were generated from the 125,000 visitors who patronized hotels, restaurants, stores and attractions, and indirectly from media exposure that leads to increased tourism and business relocation. Numerous public and private events occurred the week of Super Bowl throughout the entire tri-county area. As you can imagine, much of that activity took place on Miami Beach, specifically South Beach, beginning in late January for the Pro Bowl -the first time a Pro Bowl took place outside of Honolulu, Hawaii since 1979. The first major event was the Media Party on Tuesday, January 30, 2007. There were also several television productions taking place in the Ciry including ESPN, CBS and the NFL Network. Additionally, the City hosted the NFL's Pepsi Fan Jam on February 4 and 5, 2010. These events attracted more ACCEPTING AND than 30,000 people on each night and were televised on VH1 and Telemundo. DirecTV also hosted the Fourth Annual DirecTV Celebrity Beach Flag Football Game at 215` Street beach. The event attracted approximately 6,000 spectators and was televised on DirecTV's 101 Channel. It should be noted that this event was inaugurated in Miami Beach during Super Bowl XLI (2007). Similar to 2007, the City partnered with the Host Committee, Motorola Inc., and the Ocean Drive Association to close Ocean Drive to vehicular traffic from Thursday, February 4, through Sunday, February 7, 2010. The cost of the closure was funded by the aforementioned entities, and totaled $108,000. This included costs for Police, Fire, Sanitation and Parking services. CONCLUSION The Administration recommends adopting the attached resolution, accepting the contributions from the South Florida Super Bowl Host Committee, Ocean Drive Association, and Motorola, Incorporated, for the closure of Ocean Drive during Super Bowl XLIV.
