- ~ SUBJECT: STATUS ON'DEEP WATEIR HORIZON OlL SPILL
This Letterto Commission `is to provide you with the current status and levels of response
.associated with the deep water horizon oit spill that is currently,taking.place approximately
• one hundred thirty miles to the•southeast of the City of New Orleans.
. The City .is monitoring the event and at the present time the'lead agencies are primarily
. ...
• Federal and State governments.' The event. has been designated' aspill- of national
sighificance ;and .the • Governor has declared a State: of Emergency for all coastal.
• communities in Florida from the Panhandle south to Sarasota County.

At the present time, the. State Emergency Operations Center is partially acfivated.as are the
County-EOC's in the Panhandle area of Florida:
' As you have each. seen in the media,~the oil spill is catastrophic and will leave lasting
impacts on the adjacent communities and their<respective, economies, as well as wildlife. ,
.: As the oil spill relates specifically to Miami Beach; key variables wilt be weatherand ocean '
current related. These two (2) factors are the principle variables in determining the direction
and the level of dispersal of the actual oil spill. At'thepresent time,-this spil(has not yet
'been projected to .contact the Gulf Steam and at least presently it is drifting more westerly
• .: which may. expose. shorelines to thewest of Louisiana.
- The Gity EOC staff is in contact with the Miami-Dade County EOC', which is monitoring the
State EOC and the different levels, of response that are being undertaken at this point In
time. As events change or the incident poses a more serious or immediate threat to the City-
of ;Miami Beach, we will keep,yota updated. •
On Thursday, May 6, .201.0; I and other senior staff will be attending a briefing. conducted by
Mayor Carlos Alvarez and the subsequent press conference on the oil spill_ Any new ,
- information will be forwarded.. to the City Commission.
