Gonzalez, City Manager Date: May 7, 2010 Subject: Miami Beach Senior High IB Diploma Programme Inaugural Class Induction Invitation and Site Visit Commendations The purpose of this LTC is to invite you to the Miami Beach Senior High School 2010 Inaugural Class International Baccalaureate (IB) Diploma Programme Induction and Annual Honors Banquet on Thursday, May 27, 2010 at 6:30 p.m. at Miami Beach Senior High School (see attached). Our Education Compact has resulted in Miami Beach Senior High School having received authorization to offer the IB Diploma in August 2010 to interested and eligible Miami Beach students. The IB Diploma Programme is designed as an academically challenging and balanced programme of education with final examinations that prepares students, normally aged 16 to 19, for success at university and life beyond. The programme is normally taught over two years and has gained recognition and respect from the world's leading universities. Additionally, the International Baccalaureate Organization site visiting team commended Miami Beach High for the exemplary and noteworthy support of the City of Miami Beach. Commendations were also noted for the support of the parents for the Diploma Programme, the motivation and enthusiasm of the principals and staff for the Diploma Programme, and the international-mindedness of the teachers together with the academically oriented and involved students. In addition to welcoming you, we wish to share further observations based upon the report the site visiting team submitted to our regional office regarding your school. We do not require or request a report on your school's work on these findings, but we hope that they will be considered seriously and that they will be helpful in the successful implementation of your Diploma Programme. The site visiting team commends: • the motivation, enthusiasm, and knowledge of the coordinator, principal, and staff in regard to the Diploma Programme; students and teachers love their school and community and are proud to be a part of this educational milieu. In addition the 9 new or renovated buildings have excellent facilities, which provide the potential for growth of programs in music, film and IGTS • the international-mindedness of the teachers together with the academically oriented and involved students (i.e. the excellent IB Learner Profile posters created by the students, as well as the staffs ability to interpret this profile) are features which will reinforce the strength of the Diploma Programme • the exemplary and noteworthy support of the city and the strong support of the parents for the Diploma Programme. Page 1 ©International Baccalaureate Organization 2009 The site visiting team recommends that: • the proposal for vertical and horizontal planning be put into effect as soon as possible in order to ensure interdisciplinary cooperation and understanding • the coordinator and administration clarify the IB assessment system in relation to that of Miami Beach Senior High School and make it public to the school community • the coordinator and administration ensure that all of the teachers are aware of the assessment procedures of IB courses • the school realign its mission statement to fit more closely its actual philosophy and that of the IB • the school consider starting teaching Math Studies right away (this will free many students to strengthen their language skills over the summer) • the school also consider the future addition of such courses as Math HL, physics, music, and language ab initio-courses which would help boost enrolment in the programme and correspond to the excellent facilities.
