RESOLUTION NO.2010-47
A RESOLUTION OF THE MAYOR AND VILLAGE COUNCIL OF
THE VILLAGE OF PALMETTO BAY, FLORIDA, VIGOROUSLY
OPPOSING THE ELECTION OF THE ISLAMIC REPUBLIC OF IRAN
TO THE UNITED NATION'S COMMISSION ON THE STATUS OF
WOMEN. (Sponsored by Councilman Edward Feller, co-sponsoted vY
Mayor Eugene P. Flinn, Councilman Howard Tendrich, and CouncihNOman
Shelley Stanczyk)
WHEREAS, equal rights for women is a fundamental part of the legal and ethical
structure of the United States and of most civilized countries throughout the world; and,
WHEREAS, the United Nations has just elected the Islamic Republic of Iran to a four-
yeaz term on the U.N.'s Commission on the Status of Women, with the United States proposing
no public opposition to this election, and the U.S. government, to date, not responding to
questions concerning this; and,
WHEREAS, a group of Iranian women had circulated a petition to the United Nations,
endorsed by multiple other human rights groups that said, in part, "Iran's dts~*~+*+;natory laws
demonstrate that The Islamic Republic does aot believe in gender equality," and further stating
that, "women in Iran lack the ability to choose their husbands, have no independent right to
education after marriage, no right to divorce, no right to child custody, no protection from
violent treatment in public spaces, are restricted by quotas fox women's admission at universities,
and are arrested and imprisoned for peacefully seeking changes of such laws." They further state
that women seeking nothing more than equality in the social sphere when imprisoned have been
systematically beaten, tortured, sexually assaulted, and raped; and,
WHEREAS, ideas in a democrary frequently begin at the local level, whether it be in
government, industry, unions, professional groups, or social and political organizations, and aze
progressively moved up to higher levels that can take action.
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE MAYOR AND VILLAGE
COUNCIL OF THE VILLAGE OF PALMETTO BAY, FLORIDA AS FOLLOWS:
Section 1. The Council forwazd its opinion to its representatives in the US House of
Representatives and Senate, as well as to President Obama, and ask them to consider taking some
action to reverse this.
e n 2 The Council forwazd this to the Miami-Dade and Florida League of Cities,
as well as to all of the munidpalities in Miami Dade County, including the Miami-Dade County
Commission and the Mayor, asking them to also consider taking action on this matter.
Section 3. This resolution shall take effect immediately upon approval.
