the Project based upon the City Commission approved award. Please be as specific as possible; name of

Project description as approved by Grants Panel:
• Community Artist & Culture presents the 13 Annual Afro Roots World Music Festival as part of
its 2010 -2011 Season. This event celebrates the evolution of African culture in our community
through musical performances by local world class artists that showcase our global stage.
This year's festival will take place on Saturday, April 2 at the North Beach Band Shell on 73 St.
and Collins Ave. The festival will be featuring musical performances by Jahfe, Locos por Juana,
and for the first time in the festivals history the internationally known Haitian roots group Boukman
Esperyans. As usual, this will be an all -ages event beginning at 5pm and ending at 10:30pm.
Ticket prices will range from $10.00 presale general admission to $15 at the door, children twelve
and under get in free.
The first act perfoming is Jahfe. "Jahfe, which means "creation" is a band based out of.Miami,
FL. Their musical style fuses roots reggae with many other genres including rock, dub, soul and
R &B, creating a unique blend of organic sounds. The members of Jahfe' hail from nations all
• around the world including Haiti, Spain, Israel, Cuba, Czech Republic, Morocco and the United
States. The group embodies the power of a young generation and the wisdom of roots culture.
The music of Jahfe' uses its music to speak out against the injustices plaguing the world. They
have been featured in documentaries about domestic violence and have worked to increase
awareness about the genocide in Darfur. Jahfe "'s music is filled with references to many of the
serious issues that take place around us every day: hunger, poverty, disease, rape and hatred
between nations. Jahfe' reflects the true ability of conscious music to connect people
everywhere. Jahfe' has worked with Lauryn Hill, Wyclef Jean, Thievery's Corporations, Ky -Mani
Marley, the BlackOut Movement, Paul Fakhourie (producer: Lauryn Hill, Stephen Marley, Damian
Marley, Gwen Stephanie), Karl Pitterson, Inner Circle and The Grammy Foundation, among
others. Currently Jahfe' is playing all over the Southeast US. Their highly anticipated new album,
"The Solution" has just been released and is currently available online and at live shows.
The second band is Locos por Juana. The band was born on the streets of Miami some 10 years
ago, incorporating the musical elements its members grew up with, synthesizing them into a
completely new and unique hybrid, a fusion unlike anything people had heard before. Those
influences from the band's Colombian members — vocalist Itagui Correa, drummer Javier
"Lakambra" Delgado and Miami -born guitarist Mark Kondrat —lend to the music an unmistakable
lilt, the rhythmic shuffle of cumbia and champeta chief amongst them. Many have tried to define
their style, making valiant attempts to encapsulate something that has no formal name, but bound
by the limitation of words to describe sound. The L.A. Times called them a "funky, pan -Latin
amalgam," and referenced their "pulling listeners into a reverse Gulf Stream churning through the
Straits of Florida south to Jamaica, Venezuela and Colombia, and over to Puerto Rico." And
Miami Herald dubbed them "Miami's beloved Latin - reggae- hip -hop mashup master."
In 2003 BBC America named them the Best New Latin Rock Band, Premio lo Nuestro
nominated them for Best Urban Band and they struck gold in Premios Paoli Puerto Rico for Best
Record. 2005 saw the release of their highly - acclaimed Musica P'al Pueblo, and with it, another
slew of praise, including a Latin Grammy nomination for Best Album by Group, a Best of 2005
award from Boom Magazine, a New Times Best of Miami for Best Caribbean Band, and being
6of 10
•
named Best Latin Band in the US by BBC News Europe. And 2008 ushered in perhaps their
greatest praise yet for their next release, La Verdad, which nabbed the group a nomination in the
Grammy awards for Best Latin Rock/Alternative Album.2010 finds the irrepressible band working
as hard as ever, gigging tirelessly and working on their music, as can be evidenced in Evolucion,
six tracks of jams at once vintage Locos Por Juana and still experimental and daring, unafraid to
test boundries, push the envelope, and ignore the borders of convention.
The third and headlining act will the Grammy Nominated
Haitian Roots group Boukman Esperyans. This is the first time that our organization has
presented an internationally known act as part of the festival. The reason why we are able to
facilitate this band is simply due to the fact that one of our board members Haitian artist, Jan
Sebon has close personal ties to the band and has served as a liason to make this opportunity
happen. Boukman Eksperyans ushered in a musical revolution with their Grammy- nominated
debut album, Voudou Adjae. This brilliant release introduced the world to Boukmans worldly high
energy sound fusing traditional Haitian and Caribbean rhythms with rock and reggae. Voudou
Adjae brought the band international prominence and made them spokespeople for Haitian
people. Their music is heavily identified in Haiti with the springtime festival called Rara. In fact,
Boukman first rose to popular interest after they began winning Best Song at Carnival. In the
aftermath of the the September 1991 army coup against the Aristede government, Boukman
struggled against censorship culminating in having their 1992 Carnival entry, Kalfou Danjere,
banned the military authorities as "too violent ". They were excluded from Carnival celebrations
and their songs were prohibited from being aired on the radio. Since their emergence on the
scene, Boukman has continued to release revolutionary critically acclaimed albums and
mesmerize audiences World Wide from Haiti (where they draw tens of thousands of fans per
show) to the Caribbean, throughout North America, Canada, Europe, Japan, and Africa both as a
headlining act and alongside Wyclef Jean, Fermi Kuti, and Baba Maal.
Our target audience ranges from those who live in the underserved area to tourist who will be
alerted by their hotels concierge to individuals from other parts of the city who seek out cultural
programming but don't have enough exposure to it.
Project description as revised (if applicable) based upon the City Commission approved award:
Changes to projects awarded under the Artistic Disciplines program must still adhere to the requirement that the
work is new or has never before been presented in Miami Beach.
