Please be as specific as possible; name of event, specific dates, venues, times, artists, etc. Use extra page if necessary. Proiect description as approved by Grants Panel The mission of the New World Symphony (NWS) is to prepare highly gifted graduates of distinguished music programs for leadership roles in orchestras and ensemble groups throughout the world. Dedicated to the artistic, personal, and professional development of outstanding instrumentalists, NWS offers a fellowship that provides gifted graduates of. music programs from leading colleges, universities, and conservatories the opportunity to enhance their musical education with the finest professional training, comprising a wide range of performance, instructional, and community engagement activities. Under the artistic direction of Michael Tilson Thomas, the program offers in -depth exposure to traditional, modern, and contemporary repertoire, alongside the active involvement of leading guest conductors, soloists, and coaches from around the world. The 2010 -2011 Season will take place during an exciting transitional period in which that vision will materialize with the opening of NWS' new Frank Gehry - designed facilities. The first half of the season (Sept — Dec) will be presented at the Lincoln Theatre. Progra will include NWS' signature free series of pre- season concerts; two chamber music programs featuring Jorja Fleezanis, concertmaster of the Minnesota Orchestra, and Ian Bousfield, Principal Trombone with the Vienna Philharmonic; a Discovery Concert dedicated to the music of Spanish composer Manuel de Falla; a Baroque music program led by Italian conductor Rinaldo Alessandrini, founder and conductor of the award- winning early music ensemble Concerto Itahano; and the U.S. premiere of Colin Matthews's Violin Concerto, presented by British conductor/ composer Oliver Knussen and violinist Leila Josefowicz, considered a master of .contemporary violin repertoire and who, along with Mr. Knussen, headlined the world premiere of the work. In January 2011, NWS will move into its new Frank Gehry- designed campus — a 100,000 sq. ft. state-of- the-art facility featuring Internet2 connectivity in all performance and rehearsal spaces, a concert hall with natural acoustics, cutting -edge amplification and flexible seating arrangements, and a 2,400 sq. ft. outdoor projection area with sound facing an urban. park in the Miami Beach City Center. The new facility will offer unparalleled opportunities for musical experimentation, with unique features that enable the development of new concert formats to further expand opportunities for artists to create and perform as well as to expand and diversify audiences. , Complementing current program offerings, NWS will introduce three new concert formats: Mini Concerts of 15 to 30 minutes in length presented 3 to 5 times over the course of an evening aimed at attracting the casual passerby in this major tourist destination; Discovery Concerts, one -hour concert presentations augmented by narrative and visual enhancements, with a pre and post- concert opportunities for younger audiences to network and socialize; and Journey Concerts, thematic programs that will use the flexibility of presentation options in the new facility (the stage and four alternate performance platforms for small ensembles) to seamlessly juxtapose large and small artistic forces demarked by lighting adjustments rather than time- consuming stage changes. NWS will present the second half of the 2010 -2011 Season (Jan — May) at its new campus. The grand opening is scheduled to take place in January 2011. The opening events will be followed by programs led by Artistic Director Michael Tilson Thomas and featuring violinist Christian Tetzlaff in a performance of Bartok's Violin Concerto No. 2; a chamber music program headlined by African American pianist Stewart Goodyear;.a contemporary music program with American conductor /composer John Adams; and 6of10 acclaimed conductor Stephane Deneve will return with pianist Jean -Yves Thibaudet(to present a program of traditional and contemporary works by composers from their native France.
