TO: Mayor Matti H. Bower and Members.of the City Commission
F FROM: Jorge M. Gonzalez, City Manager
DATE: January 4, 2011
SUBJECT: Washington Avenue Shared Lanes
The purpose of this Letter to Commission is to inform you of the Washington Avenue
Shared Lane Project (Project). The Project installed shared lane bicycle markings along
Washington Avenue, from South Pointe Drive to Dade Boulevard, in the outside travel
lanes adjacent to the parking lane. The intent of this initiative is to improve bicycle safety
by encouraging bicyclists to ride on the road rather than the sidewalk, in_ the same
direction as other vehicles, and outside of the car door zone. The new pavement
markings also notify motorists that they must share the road with bicyclists.
The Public Works Department installed the shared lane markings on Washington
Avenue. The installation of the thermoplastic is estimated to be completed within
approximately four (4) weeks.
The City conducted a diligent public advisory process for this initiative in the MB
Magazine, on the City's website, in the E- Briefs, and through social media outlets, and
additional information will soon be provided in the next issue of the MB Magazine. The
Project was presented to the Washington Avenue Neighborhoods Association '(WANA)
at their August 11, 2010 meeting. City staff has also been distributing an informational
flyer to the residents and businesses along Washington Avenue, WANA, and any other
impacted neighborhood and homeowners associations (Attachment 1).
Please let me know if you have any questions or require additional information.
