OF MIAMI BEACH, FLORIDA, ESTABLISHING THE MONTH BEGINNING
SEPTEMBER 15 AND ENDING OCTOBER 15 AS "HISPANIC HERITAGE
MONTH" IN THE CITY OF MIAMI BEACH.

ANALYSIS
"Hispanic Heritage Month" was established in 1968, and every President since has issued
a formal proclamation during the month beginning September 15 and ending October 15,
asking that the nation pay tribute to the great contributions of Hispanics in their
communities. According to the U,S. Census Bureau, more than 26 million people in the
United States are of Hispanic origin.
A majority of the Miami Beach population is Hispanic and will remain as migration to South
Florida from Latin America continues. Our Hispanic population continues to contribute
significantly to the community, demonstrated by the City's sponsorship of several cultural
arts events that promote the rich Hispanic heritage, traditions, visual arts and music that
will build bridges between cultures.
The City of Miami Beach Hispanic Heritage Month celebrations begin on Thursday,
October 11, 2001 during the Arts Beach 2nd Thursday's event. Additionally, an exhibit will
be staged on the 4th floor of City Hall and a Puerto Rican exhibit will be held in the Arts,
Culture & Entertainment conference room. All events are free and open to the public.
The Administration recommends that the Mayor and the City Commission adopt the
resolution establishing the month beginning September 15 and ending October 15 as
"Hispanic Heritage Month" in the City of Miami Beach,
