Holocaust Memorial Programs In Formation
For October 2011— 2012
Each year over 100,000 visitors come to the Holocaust Memorial. This remains our
largest program. 35,000 middle, high school and college students explore the Memorial
with their peers and teachers. They spend 2 hours viewing a 22 minute video overview
of the history.of the Holocaust and the lessons for today's student, participate in the
Scroll of history with a Survivor of the. Holocaust who engages them in critical thinking
and questions and answers about the Holocaust and the Survivor's personal experience.
The students often complete their journal writing, poetry and letter writing while at the
Memorial or later in the classroom:
The annual Kristallnacht program: The Night of Broken Glass is. held at the Holocaust
Memorial for over 400 participants. It features poetry readings, songs, instrumental
interpretations and will include a new creation of the reader's theatre based on local
Survivors' testimony.
Three special programs for local, survivors are scheduled for 2011 -12 including a movie
and discussion group, story telling and Yiddish songs.
The second annual Young Lions program will begin in October 2011 due to its
'tremendous success in its inaugural year. Over 75 people will be invited to apply for this
innovative initiative which will include students aged 12, their parents, and Survivors.
The program meets for 4 months, October, November, December and January at the
Memorial.
The Chester Classroom Project will be completed by December 2011 allowing for the
installation of the Walter Spitzer Exhibit. Spitzer, a survivor of Buchenwald was
befriended by a young Army soldier as he was liberated. The Memorial has been gifted
with a large collection of his work and is developing workshops, classroom materials and
lesson plans for students. The Exhibit will be open to the public beginning in January.
