Project based upon the City Commission approved award. Please be as specific as possible; name of event, specific dates, venues, times,; artists, etc. Use extra page if necessary. Project description as approved by Grants Panel On Sunday, November 13th, 2011 7:30 pm, Ars Flores Symphony Orchestra will open its second season of concerts at the Colony Theatre with a spectacular new work entitled, "A Night at the Movies!" The concert will showcase the orchestra itself, while incorporating visual media to enhance the experience of hearing music from the movies. -The first half of the concert is comprised of classical music used in multiple movies, including music from Beethoven, Mozart, Bizet and Liszt. We will augment the auditory memory with a visual component, showing short (four- second or less) clips from movies in which each piece was used. Some of the movies featured will be Ace Ventura: Pet Detective and Charlie's Angels: Full Throttle (Mozart); Austin Powers in Goldmember and Saturday Night Fever (Beethoven); and Meet the Parents (Bizet). We also envision using Five performers /dancers, dressed as "Tom and Jerry "during the Hungarian Rhapsody No. 2 by Liszt. The second half consists of orchestral music that was written specifically for the movies. To enrich the musical. experience, we will use live dancers with the Chicago Medley, and display visuals that highlight the 'natural world and space theme' of Apollo 13 Selections and Dances with wolves, Concert Suite. The second half will end with selections from the famous Indiana Jones movies, which stand on their own. As always, we will offer a free pre- concert lecture to elaborate on the concert's subject, enabling the audience to begin the concert more informed and aware of the history and other influences that shaped the pieces. The concert is not only targeting the traditional "older orchestra follower, but also targeting younger audiences who, at first, might not be interested in attending a symphony concert. By incorporating other, more familiar art forms of visual media and dance with our concert, we hope to attract larger audiences, educate new audience members about orchestral music and create a feeling of community among our listeners. Audiences will be surprised by how. much movie music came from classical composers. ➢ On Sunday, Nov. 13, 2011, 4:00 pm, Ars Flores will begin its second season of free Music for Munchkins concerts in Miami Beach at the Colony Theatre. Ars Flores will continue expand the "Munchkins Club," registering children and their families, and encouraging attendance through membership name badges and prizes. During the concerts, children are allowed to move and respond verbally to what they hear, creating a child- friendly environment for the comfort of parents and - children and, when appropriate, interact with the orchestra on stage. After the 30- minute Munchkins concert, a reception allows the children to -interact with musicians on an individual basis. Students in all Miami Beach public schools will be invited through post cards and notices sent to the schools. 6 of 1.1 ➢ On Sunday, March 25, 2012, 7:30 pm, at the Colony Theatre, Ars Flores will present a new concert titled, "Stories in Music and Dance," with programming based on works written for ballet. In this concert, we will- collaborate for the first time with the Amazonia Vocal Ensemble, a 50- piece vocal group that is "dedicated to the performance and preservation of Latin American choral music. Their Artistic Director, Vicente Chavarria, is bringing the .piece, '1a Doncella," written by Alberto Grau, from his native Venezuela to the U.S. for the first time and will be guest - conducting. This piece is unique in that it utilizes a narrator, dancers, a chorus and an orchestra. In order to make the work accessible to American audiences, we will be translating the narration into English and providing subtitles for the choral text, as would be done for most opera performances. We will also be collaborating with the Jubilee Dance. Theater, who will choreograph and perform the ballet , accompanying the work. During this concert, we will also present "Appalachian Spring" by Aaron Copland,. "Dance of the Hours" from the opera, "La Gioconda" by Ponchielli, and "Ritual Firedance by Manuel DeFalla. All of these pieces were originally dances, and the music itself illustrates their stories. A pre- concert lecture will provide 'what -to- listen -for' tips and help the audience better understand the performance. The program was designed to attract a broader, and more diverse audience. Incorporating other groups and artists enlarges our audience; in that each of these groups has its own audience, as we have ours.. By with these groups, all of the groups benefit.by having their art form presented to audience members from.each other's groups. We believe this concert will appear to the more Hispanic, artistic nature of Miami Beach residents. ➢ Of course, we will also offer a free Music for Munchkins concert at 4:00 pm on Sunday, M.arch'25 ", at the Colony Theatre for children and their families. The Munchkins. concert will featuring samples' °of the works —along with the dances —from that evening's concert on "Stories in Music and Dance." Students in all Miami Beach public schools will be invited through post cards and notices sent to the schools. ➢ On Sunday, April 22, 2012, 7:30 pm, Ars Flores will present our chamber concert entitled, "Beautiful Music for an Intimate Setting." This concert will include an intimate evening of music for small ensembles, featuring the Ars Flores V: the resident Woodwind Quintet comprised of Mentors from the orchestra. Dr. Michael Caldwell, concert pianist and Chair of the Performing Arts Department at Nova Southeastern University (NSU), will.work with Ars Flores V to - present the "Poulenc Sextet" for Woodwind Quintet and Piano., The concert will also include "Trois Pieces Breve' by lbert, "Five Easy Dances" by Agay, and an arrangement of "Peter and the Wolf' by Prokofiev. This concert's target audience includes the more traditional classical and chamber music lover, concertgoers who prefer a closer connection to the musicians and NSU students. ➢ " We will also present a free Music for Munchkins concert on April 22nd at 4:00 pm, targeting young children and their families, featuring samples of the evening's concert: Both concerts on April 22 will take place in Colony Theatre. 7 of 11 Project description as revised (if applicable) based upon the City Commission approved award: Changes to projects awarded under the Artistic Disciplines program must still adhere to the requirement that the work - is new or has never before been presented in Miami Beach. ➢ Ars Flores had to make a programming change to the concert scheduled for Sunday, .March 25, 2012 7:30 pm, at the Colony Theatre. The theme and concert will still be. titled, "Stories in Music and Dance," with programming based on works written for ballet. However, we are unable to present the piece, "La Doncella," written by Alberto Grau, which was to be collaborated with Amazonia Vocal Ensemble. Amazonia's Artistic Director, Vicente Chavarria, relocated to California and will be unable to be here in time.to rehearse with the chorus. Because this work would have required a lot of coordination with narration subtitles, the chorus and dancers, we decided to remove it at this time. In place of "La Doncella," the orchestra will present Shostakovich's "Ballet Suite No. 1," supported by Jubilee Dance Theater, who will choreograph and perform the ballet accompanying the work. During this concert, we will also present "Appalachian Spring" by Aaron Copland, "Dance of the Hours" from the opera, "La Gioconda" by Ponchielli, and "Ritual Firedance ". by Manuel DeFalla. All 'of these pieces were originally dances, and the music itself illustrates their. stories. .A pre - concert lecture will provide 'what -to- listen -for' tips and help the audience better understand the performance. The program was designed to attract a broader and more diverse audience. Incorporating another group enlarges our audience, in that the. dance company has its own audience,, as we have ours. By, collaborating with this group, we all benefit by having our art forms presented to audience members from each other's groups. r 8 of 11 Exhibit 2 -A: Project Budget / Revised Total Project Budget Name of organization: Ars Flores Symphony Orchestra, Inc.
