TO: Mayor. Matti Herrera Bower and Members of the City Commission
FROM: City Manager Jorge M. Gonzalez
DATE: January 6, 2012
SUBJECT: Historic Preservation Board Resolution Pine Tree Drive
Attached, please find a copy of a resolution pertaining to the existing Australian Trees
located within the designated portions of historic Pine Tree Drive, which:was adopted by the
Historic Preservation Board at their November 8, 2011 meeting. The Board. is urging the City
Commission to- explore all legal avenues to waive the restrictions on planting new Australian
-Pine Trees in order to allow for the ongoing replacement of damaged trees. along Historic
Pine Tree Drive with new Australian Pine Trees:
As indicated in:LTC 308 -2011, dated December 2, 2011, no'decision has yet been made
concerning the species of trees that will replace Australian Pines removed-from Pine Tree
Drive. Australian Pine has been designated an invasive exotic'species that is prohibited by
State, County, and City regulations.
The Administration is continuing to investigate the steps necessary to replant Australian
Pines. Once the process of determining the permits and variances required for planting new
Australian Pine trees is fully reviewed and understood, the available options will be
developed and forwarded to the City Commission.
The Administration recommends that .the Commission provide any appropriate policy
direction on this matter, including a referral to the Land Use and Development Committee
for review and consideration.
