LTC 036-2012 Sunrise Pedestrian Connection Update M MIAMI BEACH
OFFICE OF THE CITY MANAGER
NO. LTC# 036-2012 LETTER TO COMMISSION
TO: Mayor Matti Herrera Bower and Members of the City Commission
FROM: Jorge M. Gonzalez, City Manager
DATE: February 6, 2012
SUBJECT: Sunrise Pedestrian Connection Up to
The purpose of this Letter to Commission is to provide you with the good news update on the status
of the Sunrise Pedestrian Connection. The Florida Department of Environmental Protection(FDEP)
issued a Coastal Construction Control Line Permit that will allow the City to construct the Sunrise
Pedestrian Connection.
The City started the environmental permitting process in May of 2011, expecting to have the permit
issued in approximately six (6) months. However, there was some delay due to requests for
information regarding the project's lighting design from the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation
Commission (FWC). On January 29, 2012, the FWC confirmed that the project's lighting plan
minimizes impacts to marine turtles and approved the lighting plan followed by FDEP issuing the
State permit on February 23, 2012.
The City is in the process of soliciting a proposal for construction via JOC. It is estimated that this
process will take approximately another month to negotiate, award, and obtain local permits. The
actual construction is estimated to take five months. In summary, it is anticipated that Sunrise Plaza
will be operational by August 2012.
