NO. 050 -tot 2 LETTER MMISSION
CI T CLEi- -,a'S 0 F iCI
TO: Mayor Matti Herrera Bower and Members of the City Commission
FROM: Jorge M. Gonzalez, City Manager
DATE: February 15, 2012
SUBJECT: National Jazz Day April 13, 2012
The purpose of this Letter to Commission is to inform you of the City's commemoration of
National Jazz Day on Friday, April 13, 2012, with a free Arts in the Parks jazz concert in
Collins Park from 4 p.m. to 8 p.m. Featured artists will include David Siegel, LeNard
Rutledge, Alfredo Chacon and Troy Roberts and their bands, showcasing a broad range of
current jazz styles. Elementary and high school students will have a chance to learn from
and jam with the professional musicians from 4 p.m. to 5:00 p.m. The show will culminate
with an improvisational jam from the musicians of all four groups.
National Jazz Day was created as a response to Congressional resolution HR 57, which
declared jazz a national treasure. It is a major cultural initiative of the U.S. Conference of
Mayors. Jazz, America's gift to the world, is a powerful cultural force and a source of
national pride; its economic impact, however, is less well understood. National Jazz Day will
shine a spotlight on how jazz is an integral part of building community by providing a link to
our national musical heritage, as well as supporting a creative workforce which spreads
economic opportunities to multiple sectors in our cities.
Please mark your calendars and plan to join me in Collins Park for this important Arts in the
Parks event.
