SUBJECT: April — Water Conservation Month
The purpose of this Letter to Commission (LTC) is to inform you that during the month of April,
the City will be celebrating Water Conservation Month and promoting to our residents and
businesses the importance of conserving water year- round. Clean and sustainable water
resources are vital to Florida and the City's environment, economy and quality of life. Residents,
visitors and businesses can make positive contributions by making minor changes in behavior
that reduce water use and protect Florida's water resource.
On April 11, 2012, the City of Miami Beach will be celebrating Water Conservation Month at City
Hall outside the Commission Chambers from 9 am to 1 pm. Miami -Dade County Water and
Sewer Department (WASD) and City of Miami Beach Pubic Works, Environmental Resources
Division will be available to answer questions and provide residents, businesses and City
employee's with information about how to save water and protect our water resources. Miami -
Dade County residents will be able to exchange up to two (2) water - wasting showerheads for
water- efficient models and will be able to exchange three (3) old light bulbs for energy saving
compact fluorescent bulbs.
The City is also participating in the Wyland Foundation's Mayor's Challenge for Water
Conservation, a non - profit competition, from March 30 — April 30. The Challenge encourages
residents to make a series of informative, easy -to -use online pledges aimed at drastically
reducing water and energy use. In return residents can win a Toyota Prius Hybrid, water saving
fixtures, and hundreds of other prizes. Cities are divided into four regions (West, Midwest,
South and Northeast) and categorized by population (5,000- 30,000 residents, 30,001- 100,000
residents, 100,000+ residents). Cities with the highest percentage of residents who take the
