SUBJECT: Detective Daniel Erben - MDCACP March Officer of the Month
This Letter to the Mayor and City Commissioners is to announce that Miami Beach
Police Detective Daniel Erben was selected by the Miami -Dade County Association of
Chiefs of Police as their March 2012 Officer of the Month.
Detective Erben was off -duty at a marina area of the Towers of Quayside in
unincorporated Miami -Dade .County when he observed a vehicle drive over the seawall
and into Biscayne Bay. Detective Erben and his friends immediately rushed over to
investigate and offer their assistance. The vehicle was observed upside down, drifting
away from the seawall and almost completely submerged. Detective Erben leaped into
Biscayne Bay and swam to the driver's door and pulled it open. He then went
underwater and felt around for passengers. He felt what he' believed to be a leg and
resurfaced for air and went back down. He was able to pull the unconscious driver out
of the water. His friends were able to throw an inflatable vessel into the water and help
him pull, the driver onto the inflatable vessel. Their initial assessment revealed that the
81 year old driver was unconscious, not breathing, and unresponsive. Detective Erben
directed the rescue efforts and initiated chest compressions until Miami -Dade Fire
Rescue arrived on the scene and took over the rescue effort.
Please join me in commending Detective Erben's heroic efforts to save this life.
