DATE: May 3, 2012
SUBJECT: Miami -Dade County School Board cognizes Parent Child Home Program
The purpose of this Letter to Commission (LTC) is to inform you of Dr. Michael Karp's
recognition of the City's Parent Child Home Program at the May 16 School Board
meeting.
Dr. Karp, the City's representative to the Miami -Dade County School Board, will be
recognizing the City's Parent -Child Home Program for its efforts to improve early literacy
and increase language among toddlers and pre - school children. The program also
enhances social and emotional development while strengthening the parent -child
relationship.
Since October 2011, the City has partnered with Barry University, a member of the
Miami Beach Service Partnership, to deliver services to up to 50 children and their
parents. Funded via a $150,000 grant from The Children's Trust, the program provides
free books and toys as well as twice - weekly home visits for children aged 16 months to
53 months. Home visits are conducted by trained Home Visitors who model reading,
play and other activities to children and parents during their two -year enrollment. Eligible
parents with children aged 16 months to 30 months must come from low income
households and either have been born in another country and /or never obtained a
college degree.
The Parent -Child Home Program is one of three programs funded by The Children's
Trust and implemented by the Office of Community Services. The others are:
• Morning All Stars — providing prevention of early onset drug, alcohol and tobacco
use as well as reducing bullying to sixth and seventh graders at Nautilus Middle
and Fienberg Fisher K -8 Center.
• Success University — providing truancy intervention services utilizing a Care
Coordination model to students attending Miami Beach Senior High, Nautilus
Middle and Biscayne Elementary.
