OFFICE OF THE CITY MANAGER
NO. LTC # 231 -2012 I LETTER TO COMMISSION
TO: Mayor Matti Herrera Bower and Members of the City Commission
c,
FROM: Kathie G. Brooks, Interim City Manager
cn
DATE: September 10, 2012
` SUBJECT: "Magic City" filming on Washington Avenue
The purpose of this Letter to Commission (LTC) is to inform you about filming of the
Miami Beach -set television series "Magic City" that will have impacts on businesses and
residents this Thursday, September 13 from 7pm to lam. In order to achieve the look of
the 1959 set show, the production will need to close portions of the area to dress and
place period extras and cars. The primary closure area is both sides of Washington
Avenue from 10 to 11 streets. In addition, for the first portion (7 to 10pm) the production
will also close the southbound lane of Washington from 11 to 12 streets and 11 Street
between Washington Avenue and Pennsylvania Avenue. Access to the Police Station
and area residents will remain open at all times. From 10pm to about 12am (midnight),
the production will close southbound Washington Avenue from 9 to 10 streets.
Additional Intermittent Traffic Controls (ITC) of no more than 10 minutes at a time will
occur on northbound Washington when filming takes place. Police will maintain the
closures, ITC and reroute of north and southbound traffic per the approved Management
of Traffic Plan, allowing drivers to use Pennsylvania and Collins as detours.
In addition, pre and post production set dressing will occur between 10 and 11 streets on
Thursday from 4 to 7pm and on Friday from 1 to 4am using a bucket truck and police
escort. The production vehicles will be using the meters along the east side of Drexel
Avenue, along 12 and 13 streets. The production has obtained signed consent from all
businesses and residents in these directly affected areas and further notified blocks
beyond the affected areas. The noise ordinance will be maintained at all times.
This is the first filming in Miami Beach of the second season of "Magic City," Starz's
series about the challenges of owning one of the most successful hotels in Miami Beach
(and the world) in 1959 as seen through the eyes of the owner and his family. The
production is thrilled to return to our area and invites the members of the Commission to
visit the set while in the City or visit their studio sets they have created in their makeshift
stages near the airport. Please contact Max Sklar, Acting Assistant City Manager, to
make arrangements to visit the set.
Please let me know if you have any questions.
