As a foil for this, FIU Professors of Art Pip Brant and Kathy Dambach will hold workshops throughout the month to explore the politically subversive aspects and artistic potentialities of craft, in particular ceramics and fabric. Brant and Dambach will organize workshops for schools within the Miami Beach area on "renegade craft." An academic panel will explore the art world's recent, almost obsessive interest in craft as art. Recording from the Structures Within Exhibition opening/closing: Thursday, November 2 - closing date to be determined Project description: A groundbreaking collaboration among the University of Houston, Clear Lake, Johnson Space Center, Houston, and FIU, this exhibition will show artist books and video work of mid-career American artist Geraldine Ondrizek. Cellular, the centerpiece of the show, is an installation of three projections of a developing spider embryo at a stage when it morphologically appears to be a human embryo; ambient sound includes that of amplifications of vibrations made by healthy and cancerous cells. Ondrizek's work makes surprising connections between planetary and corporeal bodies; and surfaces the artificial divide between the sciences and arts. A panel will explore the work through the lens of scientists, philosophers, and astronomers; and a special performance will also be commissioned based on Ondrizek's work. Multi-site exhibition organized by art historian Jane Chin Davidson; FIU/MBUS presentation organized by FIU Assistant Professor Contemporary Art and Theory Alpesh Kantilal Patel. Friday, November 2, 2012 @ 7pm: Opening Reception Tuesday, November 6 @ 7pm: Conversation and Talk This interdisciplinary panel will explore Ondrizek's work through the lens of everything from astrophysics and molecular biology to music and philosophy. Panelists include FIU Instructor of Physics Dr. Fiorella Terenzi, whose research and creative interests include astrophysics and music; FIU Assistant Professor of Philosophy Dr. Monika Piotrowska, whose research interests include bioethics; and University of Miami Associate Professor in the Division of Endocrinology, Diabetes and Metabolism Alejandro Caicedo. Moderated by Dr. Alpesh Kantilal Patel, FIU Assistant Contemporary Art and Theory Professor. Tuesday, November 13 @ 7pm: Performance by educator, theorist, and dancer Marie Garlock North Carolina-based Marie Garlock will present a work inspired by Ondrizek's work "Cellular."An innovative, interactive performance, it will explore cultures of response and economies of disease currently developing around cancer in the US. Audience participation is welcome. 7 of 12 Educational event with local schools December 2013: Rental (in negotiations with Italian curators) or extension of Ondrizek exhibition into early January. January 2013: Exhibition organized by Department of Architecture Educational event with local schools February/March 2013: Game Show Exhibition opening/closing dates: February 8-March 8, 2013 Project description: Game Show explores "gaming" as it is played out in a wide range of contemporary art practices through the work of nine nationally and internationally exhibiting artists and/or musicians: Jeremy Couillard, Mariah Dekkenga, Aaron Hughes, Dustin London, Russell Maltz, Michael Namkung, Michael Perrone, Jacob Sudol, Brian Zegeer. Work included in the exhibition is influenced by, or makes reference to, board games, video games, puzzles, sports and athletics, or has in some way a game-like mindset in concept or construction. Much of the work repurposes the parameters or structures of a game to call attention to process rather than objective, or redefines the objective entirely. Though a sense of play runs throughout the exhibition, some pieces use the traditionally light-hearted nature of gaming as a foil for more existential concerns, using gaming as a metaphor for the complexities and absurdities of life itself. The exhibition will also feature two nights of performance, including an aerobic drawing performance based in audience participation by FIU Assistant Professor of Drawing Michael Namkung and an electronic music performance by FIU Assistant Professor of Composition and Director of Music Technology Jacob Sudol and his FIU Laptop and Electro-Acoustic Ensemble (FLEA). Organized by FIU Visiting Professor of Painting Dustin London. Friday, February 8, 2013 @ 7pm: Opening Reception TBD, February TBD @ 7pm: Conversation and Talk: Gaminq TBA. Moderated by FIU Visiting Professor of Painting Dustin London Educational event with local schools March/April 2013: Painting Now(title tbc) Exhibition opening/closing dates: March 22-April 26, 2013 Project Description: Group exhibition surveying the contemporary state of painting in south Florida and beyond. A number of works by FIU BFA and MFA alumni will be included to fulfill one of the directives of MBUS: to support emerging and more established graduates of our program. An academic panel will discuss the role of contemporary painting in the art world, in particular Miami. Organized by Pip Brant. Friday, March 22, 2013 @ 7pm: Opening Reception Educational event with local schools 8 of 12 May 2013: Solo exhibition by Paul Donald(title tbd) Exhibition opening/closing dates: May 3-May 31, 2013[Tentative] Project Description: One of the central aims of MBUS Gallery is to mount one-person exhibitions of work by emerging artists once a semester and in the creation of new work. In that vein, the gallery space will be taken over by Canada-based and Australia-born artist Paul Donald. He will literally build a raised walkway, like one might see traversing swamps, in the gallery space; the performance will be filmed and replayed as the artist works. Donald's work aims to activate/animate the roles of artist and audience—both of which often remain invisible within the gallery/art conceit. Structural constraints—after all this is a gallery space not the Everglades—ultimately become material from which alternative relationships between and among viewers, artists, and artworks can be made, "built" as it were. Organized by FIU Professor of Contemporary Art and Theory Alpesh Kantilal Patel. Opening Reception Friday, May 3 2013 @ 7pm Summer 2013: June/July/August Exhibition opening/closing dates: TBD Project Description: Supporting emerging curators and actively promoting productive exchange among young artists and art historians/curators are two goals of our vision for MBUS. To that end, an exhibition proposal by graduating FIU seniors will be chosen through competition to be realized in July/August. Emphasis is also on producing educational events (panels as well as ones for a younger audience). TBD @ 7pm: Conversation and Talk TBA. September 2013: FIU MFA Grad Lab Exhibition opening/closing dates: TBD Project Description: MBUS will serve as a dynamic space this month where our first year MFA students not only show work they have already produced, but also literally map out influences (books, artworks, popular culture, personal history, anecdotes, music, etc.) that gave rise to the `finished' product. These influences will be made visible on the wall adjacent to the object. Visitors will be encouraged to respond to works, too. The dynamic exchange emphasizes the role of the gallery not just as a space of display, but as an intersubjective one that is always in process and flux. In tandem with this exhibition, a panel will explore what FIU's MFA program should look like. Date TBA. Organized by Jacek Kolasinski and Alpesh Kantilal Patel.
