LTC 014-2013 Miami Beach Police Department m MIAMI BEACH
OFFICE OF THE CITY MANAGER
NO. LTC # 014 -2013 LETTER TO COMMISSION
TO: Mayor Matti Herrera Bower and Members of the City Commission
FROM: Kathie G. Brooks, Interim City Manager
DATE: January 15, 2013
SUBJECT: Miami Beach Police Department — Pedestrian Safety Initiative
The purpose of this Letter to the Commission is to update you on the Miami Beach Police
Department's (MBPD) Pedestrian Safety Initiative.
As you may have noticed, pedestrian safety signs have been installed throughout South
Beach (Area 1). In addition, increased enforcement details have been established in Area I
(South Pointe Drive to 23r Street), particularly in the South of Fifth neighborhood, West
Avenue, Alton Road, 15 Street and Jefferson Avenue, where the incidence of speeding is
highest. The increased enforcement at these specific locations comes as a result of citizen
complaints and the high volumes of pedestrian traffic.
As a result of these enforcement actions, 208 citations were issued, 3 vehicles towed and
eight (8) arrests were effectuated for. Bench Warrants and Driving while Driver's License
Suspended.
The MBPD will continue to install pedestrian safety signs throughout the City, and continue
enforcement action to deter speeding in our community.
If you have any questions, please feel free to contact me.
