SUBJECT: Parent Child Home Program Receives Free Books to Support Literacy Efforts
The purpose of this Letter to Commission (LTC) is to inform you that the City's Parent
Child Home Program is one of 15 national literacy programs selected by Kids Need to
Read to receive 200 free books that will support our early reading efforts.
Kids Need to Read is a national organization whose mission is "to create a culture of
reading for children by providing inspiring books to literacy programs throughout the
country." The organization recognizes that children face a plethora of challenges and
obstacles in today's world. Kids Need to Read believes that reading inspires confidence,
bridges the differences between people and forms a fundamental stepping stone to
better communication skills.
Kids Need to Read selected the City's Parent Child Home . Program for its efforts to
promote early literacy among pre - school aged children. The Parent Child Home
Program, funded by The Children's Trust, provides twice weekly home visits and free
books and toys supporting parent efforts to promote literacy, learning and positive
relationships. Program participants start as early as 16 months and stay with the
program. for up to two years. The Program, nationally recognized as a best practice,
increases language and literacy skills, enhances social and emotional development and
strengthens the parent -child relationship.
Eligible Parent Child Home Program youth are aged 16 to 30 months age whose parents
were either born in another country or did not attend college. Participation is limited to
low- income families. Interested parents are encouraged to review the program brochure
