TO: Mayor Matti Herrera Bower and Members of the ty Commission

DATE: April 5, 2013
SUBJECT: City of Miami Beach Gun Buy Back Event
This Letter to the Commission will serve to inform you of the results of the first City of
Miami Beach Gun Buy Back event.
On March 30, 2013, the Miami Beach Police Department administered a Gun Buy Back
event at the Miami Beach Convention Center from 10am to 2pm. During the course of
the event, 25 firearms were exchanged for a total of $2,750 in Visa gift cards.
Following is a list of the firearms received as part of this event:
• 2 rifles
• 2 shotguns
• 14 semi - automatic pistols
• 7 revolvers
Due to its lethality, it is important to highlight the receipt of an SKS rifle. The SKS rifle is
a military style semi - automatic weapon that chambers a 7.62mm x 39mm round, and
has the potential to fire 35 to 40 rounds per minute. This round is a military grade round
and is the same caliber as the more commonly known AK -47.
The event was covered by local television media, including CBS 4, NBC 6 and WSVN 7,
which highlighted the City's efforts in creating public awareness about gun safety.
If you have any questions, please let me know.
