Y Y agar e.a - r DATE: May 2,-2013 . » 7; SUBJECT: FDOT PORT OF MIAMI- TUNNE PROJECT U -PDATE Na The purpose of this Letter to Commission is to.,provide an update on. the Florida Department of Transportation (FDOT) District Six Port of Miami Tunnel Project. The Port of� Miami Tunnel structure connects eastbound MacArthur Causeway to the Port of Miami (Attachment A). Since the commencement of tunnel boring operations in October 2011 rthe construction of the - .. Port of Miami Tunnel has continued to progress according to schedule. The'. Tunnel Boring Machine (TBM) has-completed about 95 percent of the westbound tunnel boring and is anticipated to surface at the - work zone .on MacArthur Causeway during the week of May 6, 2013. Construction activities inside the eastbound and westbound tunnels and tunnel approaches are also occurring according to schedule. Ongoing activities include the construction of the tunnel approaches, walkways, utilities, and fire panels for the eastbound and westbound tunnels. ..The lane, closure schedule has remained consistent since project inception. Currently, FDOT is conducting the closure of one (1) eastbound travel lane from 9:00 AM to 3:30 AM as needed. Following the surfacing of the TBM at the work zone on the MacArthur Causeway, FDOT will be implementing the closure of one (1) lane in the westbound direction beginning 600 ft. west of Fountain Streef'(Palm Island) to 100 ft. east of the approach-to the MacArthur Causeway Bridge _.. from 10:00 PM to 5:30 This closure will allow the - disassembling of the TBM and the transportation of -the parts out of- the work zone. The approach to the closure will be properly signed to lower the speed of vehicles entering'the closure and increase safety. This closure will occur in approximately two (2) weeks and is scheduled to last two (2) to five (5) days. If needed', the closure of one (1) additional westbound lane will be in effect from 1 :00 -AM to 5:00 AM. The construction of. the Port of Miami Tunnel remains on ,schedule and is, anticipated to be completed by May 2014 (Attachment B).
