NO. LTC# 272-2013 LETT R TO COMMISSION
TO: Mayor matti Herrera Bower and Mtral ers of th City Commission
FROM: Jimmy L. Morales, City Manager
DATE: August 9, 2013
SUBJECT: Emergency Funding to Offset Fed Sequ ester Impacts on Elder Meal Sites
within the City
The purpose of this Letter to Commission (LTC) is to provide you with an update on the
directive issued by the Finance and Citywide Projects Committee (FCWPC) at its July
25, 2013 meeting.
At this meeting, the Committee directed the Administration to provide interim funding to
Little Havana Activities & Nutrition Centers and Jewish Community Services of South
Florida to address the meal reductions created by sequester cuts. The Committee
directed that the funds provided be limited to the actual food costs incurred. As such, the
Committee directed that the meal allocation be $3.00 for Little Havana Activities &
Nutrition Centers and $5.62 for Jewish Community Services (JCS). The JCS allocation
was higher because it must provide kosher meals which have a higher cost.
On August 8, 2013, the Administration received an email from Little Havana Activities &
Nutrition Centers that it would decline these funds as the actual cost of delivering the
meals was not being addressed and the agency is unable to offset the unfunded gap.
The Administration plans to meet with Little Havana Activities & Nutrition Centers and
will provide an update at the August 21,2013 FCWPC meeting.
