DATE: September 4, 2013
SUBJECT: Miami Beach Police Officer — First n Scene at Accident on 1 -95
The purpose of this Letter to Commission (LTC) is to inform you of recent incident,
where the heroic actions by an Officer of the Miami Beach Police Department saved a
number of lives.
On September 1, 2013, at approximately 9:48 p.m., Miami Beach Police Officer Earl
Hackworth was on his way in to work southbound on 1 -95, when he came across a
serious vehicular accident with multiple injuries.
Officer Hackworth observed a .person trapped inside of a burning vehicle, as well as
several people who had been ejected from the vehicle lying in the highway. After
immediately assessing the situation, Officer Earl Hackworth took control of the scene by
utilizing the only resources he had — guiding bystanders to assist him with redirecting
traffic around the victims who were scattered across the highway.
Officer Hackworth proceeded to pull the trapped occupant of the burning vehicle to
safety. Additional Miami Beach Police Department units arrived on the scene and
blocked traffic to provide Miami Dade Fire Rescue with a safe area to treat the patients.
The scene was later turned over to Florida Highway Patrol.
I want to take this opportunity to commend Officer Earl Hackworth for his heroic actions.
His response to this incident, even though it was outside of our City, reflects the
commitment of our police officers to ensuring public safety. Attached are some photos
from the scene of the accident for your review and information.
