NWS is innovative in nature, and this organizational attribute has been highlighted through the development and implementation of initiatives of community-wide and interdisciplinary impact. NWS has been at the forefront in the use of technology in the arts, making extensive use of the advanced network videoconferencing technology of Internet2. This technology enables orchestra Fellows to receive master classes and coaching from artists around the world. NWS' pioneering use of this technology has spearheaded its adaptation by music institutions and by art groups in general, further promoting greater cross-cultural understanding and artistic collaboration among artists worldwide. NWS' efforts in this area were rewarded with several leadership grants and multi-year commitments, including a $5 million grant from the John S. and James L. Knight Foundation to establish the Knight New Media Center. 6 of 10 NWS' pioneering work with the sustained exploration of alternate presentation formats is supported by The Andrew W. Mellon Foundation, with two multi-year gifts totaling $1 million. This ongoing, partnered effort to expand and retain new audiences through Alternate Performance Format concerts has garnered much attention among leaders in the field of classical music. Since its opening, representatives from 109 arts organizations in the U.S., Europe, Asia and Australia have visited New World Center to consider their own futures based on NWS' approaches and accomplishments. Honored by the American Society of Composers, Authors, and Publishers (ASCAP) with awards in 2003, 2007, 2009, and 2011 for Adventurous Programming of Contemporary Music, NWS will continue to underscore its commitment to the genre by bringing composers into the concert hall, some via Internet2, to further enhance the audience's appreciation and understanding of musical complexity. Organizational Public Outreach NWS' Community Engagement program is a comprehensive initiative designed to offer impactful exchanges between Fellows and the Miami-Dade County community. Components include: classroom presentations (NWS in the Schools; 1,407 K-12 participating students in the 2011/12 academic year); adult music educational lectures (Inside the Music; 580 audience members in the 2012/12 Season); and free private lessons (Young Musicians' Lessons; 23 K-12 students enrolled in the 2011/12 academic year). An integral part of the Community Engagement program is MusicLab, a 26-week residency program that brings the expertise of NWS Fellows directly into the classroom. This program currently serves students of four schools in the Miami-Dade public school system, including Feinberg-Fisher Elementary School and Miami Beach Senior High School. NWS Fellows work with more than 100 students throughout the school year in group mentoring sessions, exposing them to young professional musicians who share their expertise and enthusiasm for music. NWS believes that the orchestra musician of the 21 st century needs not only extraordinary performance training, but also the skills to contribute to society at large as an advocate, educator, mentor, and leader. NWS' Community Engagement program offers the Fellows the experience of involvement within Greater Miami while helping them become effective and enthusiastic advocates for classical music in the communities in which they secure professional positions. Project description as revised (if applicable) based upon the City Commission approved award: Changes to projects awarded under the Artistic Disciplines program must still adhere to the requirement that the work is new or has never before been presented in Miami Beach.
