Exhibit 1 / Revised Project Description
Organization: Greater Miami Youth Symphony
Completely describe Project approved by the Grants Panel and in a separate narrative detail all revisions to
the Project based upon the City Commission approved award. Please be as specific as possible; name of
event, specific dates, venues, times, artists, etc. Use extra page if necessary.
Project description as approved by Grants Panel:
The GMYS 2014-15 Beach Outreach series will expand on our current and successful innovative outreach
programs. GMYS will collaborate again with Thomas Armour Youth Ballet (TAYB), presenting a unique
collaboration of youth musicians and dancers working and performing together. In addition,GMYS young
musicians will act as music ambassadors, offering family-friendly outreach presentations at community
venues. GMYS small ensembles will also perform chamber works in various Miami Beach venues.
Presentations will take place at North Shore Youth Center,ArtCenter, Miami Beach Regional Library, and
the Jewish Museum of Florida. The presentations will offer a mix of activities including instrumental
performances, collaboration between young musicians and dancers, instrument demonstrations, as well
as question and answer periods. Through this project, GMYS will offer free and innovative performances
and presentations to Miami Beach residents and visitors in accessible community venues.
The 2012-13 season was the debut for our collaboration with TAYB,with the first performance taking place
on the Beach in October. The GMYS Concert Orchestra performed a movement from Vivaldi's"Summer"
from The Four Seasons while TAYB youth dancers performed alongside the musicians. TAYB artistic staff
created the choreography for the performance, and then taught the students the dance steps. For the
2013-14 season, GMYS and TAYB collaborated and performed Benny Goodman's Sing, Sing, Sing. A
new piece will be chosen for the 2014-15 season, and new choreography will be created. TAYB and
GMYS will perform together at both the North Shore Youth Center on October 24 (a teacher workday) as
well as a Saturday morning at the Miami Beach Regional Library. In addition to our performing ensembles
that will be showcased on the Beach, the GMYS Miami Beach beginner strings program will also be
featured at performances at the library as well as the Jewish Museum of Florida. The performance at the
museum will take place on a Museum Family Day on a Sunday in coordination with museum staff. GMYS
chamber ensembles will also perform in the ArtCenter gallery on a Saturday evening during one of the
center's Studio Crawls. The specific dates for the library and ArtCenter performances will also be
coordinated with venue staff. Events at the library, museum, and youth center will also have child-friendly
components including instrument demonstrations, instrument petting zoos, and musical worksheets that
teach musical terms, notations, and instrument names.
A variety of performing groups from GMYS will be showcased in the Beach Outreach events. The GMYS
Concert Orchestra will perform at the North Shore Youth Center, and GMYS chamber ensembles will
perform at both ArtCenter and the Miami Beach Regional Library. Chamber ensembles are small
ensembles of students currently enrolled in our Concert and Symphony orchestras. In addition, the GMYS
Miami Beach beginner string class and the Beach Mozarts will perform at the library and the Jewish
Museum. The beginner string class is a free class currently funded by The Children's Trust and held
Sunday mornings at North Shore Youth Center. Students are first and second year young musicians. The
Beach Mozarts was started just this past year for students who have graduated from the beginner class
and are ready for an ensemble so that beach area families do not have to drive all the way to our Young
Mozarts Orchestra rehearsal in Kendall. Dancers from TAYB collaborating with the GMYS Concert
Orchestra and chamber ensembles will be ballet and tap dancers.
GMYS will use a variety of social media resources to market our events. In addition to producing a
monthly press release, all GMYS events are posted in our monthly enewsletter distributed via Constant
Contact(over 3,500 emails), on our website www.gmys.org,as well as our facebook(over 1,600 followers)
and twitter pages. Video of performances is also posted on our youtube page. GMYS also set up an
Instagram page this past year and enlisted one of our high school students to help tailor content to youth.
6of10
GMYS will also work with performance venue staff to promote events through their marketing systems and
to their patrons.
The GMYS Beach Outreach events will be geared primarily to young families and children, but all events
will be free and open to the general public. The dance and music collaboration between GMYS and TAYB
will provide a unique opportunity for our students and staff to demonstrate and discuss the connection
between dance and music. Staff will demonstrate fun exercises with the youth audience such as the
effects on a dancer when musicians speed up the tempo unexpectedly. Youth musicians and dancers will
also demonstrate concepts such as phrasing, release, and pulse through the collaborative work.
In addition to the collaboration, GMYS will also provide fun activities for youth audience members including
instrument demonstrations, instrument petting zoos, and musical worksheets and games. GMYS students
will showcase the similarities and differences between the orchestral instruments and youth audience
members will have the opportunity to try-out student instruments brought by GMYS staff. Worksheets
distributed by GMYS will provide information regarding musical names and notations. The various stages
of musical development will also be displayed through the incorporation of our beginner Miami Beach
strings class in to the events alongside our more advanced orchestra musicians. Performances at the
Jewish Museum may be theme-based according to the corresponding exhibit taking place at the museum.
The presentations at the museum, library, and youth center will all provide youth-friendly activities along
with the performance. Due to the set-up and nature of the ArtCenter Studio Crawl, this event will be a
performance with brief explanations for the audience.
Project description as revised (if applicable) based upon the City Commission approved award:
Changes to projects awarded under the Artistic Disciplines program must still adhere to the requirement that the work
is new or has never before been presented in Miami Beach.
There are no changes to the Beach Outreach project. Under GMYS's new executive director, venue
options have evolved to include a main-stage performance during Art Deco Weekend on Saturday,
January 17 from 1:00 until 2:00 and a booth with an instrument petting zoo in the "Playground" kids
area at Lummus Park during Art Deco Weekend. There are two performance scheduled at the North
Shore Youth Center for December 17 and February 17; the latter will be in conjunction with the
Thomas Armour Youth Ballet. GMYS will have the privilege of performing at the New World Center
twice this year; once on December 13 and then another date TBD in the spring. The Miami Beach
Library date is not yet set but will take place in the spring. Other Miami Beach venues and dates are
still being planned.
