SUBJECT: COMMENCEMENT OF CHARE;TEE - BEAUTIFICATION OF THE ALTON ROAD
FLYOVER BRIDGE ON THE EA' TERN END OF 1-395.
BACKGROUND
The City's Public Works Department is working on a project with Florida International
University's (FIU) School of Architecture (SOA) to beautify the Alton Road flyover bridge on the
eastern end of 1-395. Currently, the fly-over concrete is in need of painting, it is dark and
foreboding at night, and has under-utilized space beneath it.
We obtained a proposal from FIU in the amount of $7,000 that would include the following
scope of service:
1. A three (3) day, eight (8) hour per day charrette, with three (3) SOA faculty members
and (4-6) SOA graduate students.
2. Verbal and visual presentation of charrette findings and submittal of pdf files containing
research, sketches, and drawings.
Public Works is also working with Miami-Dade County to come up with a conceptual design of
what the flyover should look like, and the Florida Department of Transportation to extend the
painting of the railing to include the structural columns. The City's Planning Department is
weighing in on the color scheme provided by FIU. The painting phase of the FDOT Alton Road
project is scheduled to take place in the July-August time frame.
CURRENT STATUS
The charrette started today with an onsite meeting, site photos, measurements and initial
discussions with stakeholders. The charrette will resume tomorrow with the development of 2D
and 3D renderings. There will also be a public forum tomorrow afternoon to discuss sketches
and consider options. The charrette will conclude on Friday with the completion of drawings
and renderings and placed into a Power Point presentation for public review.
