Subject: VETERAN'S DAY WEEKEND
The purpose of this Letter to the Commission is to provide the Mayor and Commission with
an update regarding the Veteran's Day weekend events.
The City of Miami Beach, Ocean Drive Association and Ocean Drive magazine is
sponsoring a free Veteran's Day benefit concert featuring *NSYNC and Friends (Mpress,
Dante Thomas, Tito Puente Jr., Willa Ford and Deborah Cox) on Sunday, November 11,
2001. This historic event will take place on the sands of South Beach from 8th to 16th
streets at 5:00 p.m. with gates for general admission (located at 9th, 10th, 11th, 12th and 13th
streets) opening at 10:00 a.m. VIP Reserved Section (8th Street) will open at 12:00 p.m.
The twilight concert, under the sun and stars, is a salute to the heroic New York police and
fire departments. The proceeds from the sales of VIP tickets and concessions will benefit
the families of the victims of the September 11 terrorist attacks, as well as displaced
workers from our local community who have lost their jobs since September 11.
The City's traditional Veterans Day Parade will begin at 9:30 a.m. and will run on
Washington Avenue from 1ih to 11th streets. A wreath-laying ceremony will be held at
11 :00 a.m. at the Police Station, 1100 Washington Avenue.
The City has been working diligently with other agencies (local, state, and federal) to
ensure that resources and security are appropriately allocated for this event. Hundreds of
the City's personnel, including Police, Fire and Beach Patrol, will be volunteering their time
to this event.
