OFFICE OF THE CITY MANAGER
NO. LTC# 265-2015 LETTER TO COMMISSION
TO: Mayor Philip Levine and Members ';pf the C."y Commission
FROM: Jimmy L. Morales, City Manage
DATE: June 25, 2015
SUBJECT: STATE ROAD A1A/MACARTHU CAUSEWAY BICYCLE SAFETY IMPROVEMENT
PAVEMENT MARKING PROJECT
The purpose of this Letter to Commission(LTC)is to provide information regarding upcoming partial
nightly lane closures of the outside travel lanes on State Road A1A/MacArthur Causeway as part of
a Miami-Dade County Public Works and Waste Management Department pavement marking
project. The project focuses on improving bicycle safety during the County's ongoing West Venetian
Bascule Bridge Rehabilitation Project. The Venetian Causeway western-most bridge has been
closed since June 1, 2015 for all traffic and it is expected to reopen to the public in approximately
nine (9) months. During this time, MacArthur Causeway has been assigned as the detour route for
vehicular and bicycle traffic.
As a result of concerns expressed by residents and elected officials in terms of bicycle safety along
the Macarthur Causeway, the subject project was initiated to improve roadway safety conditions
along both directions of the MacArthur Causeway. The scope of work includes installation of a
crosswalk at the entrance ramp of the Causeway for pedestrian and bicycle access and installation
of audible vibratory pavement markings adjacent to the existing 6-inch white thermoplastic line which
delineates the bike lane from the outside travel lane in both directions along the MacArthur
Causeway. The County has informed the City that partial night-time lane closures will begin
Wednesday, June 24, 2015 and continue through Saturday, June 27, 2015.Work will be performed
between 8:00 PM and 5:00 AM as part of a moving Maintenance of Traffic (MOT) operation. A
portion of the outside travel lane will be closed while the work is performed on that segment of the
roadway. As the work is completed, the MOT moves forward to the next segment along the outside
travel lane.
The City will disseminate notifications via electronic distribution and social media.
Please feel free to contact me if you have any questions or concerns.
